Pot-bellies are susceptible to various diseases and will require some vaccinations. Generally, it is a good idea to get vaccinations for Erysipelas, Leptospirosis, Atrophic Rhinitis and Brucellosis. Tetanus is also recommended. Breeding animals require additional vaccinations and will also require more frequent booster shots. Please consult a veterinarian in your area to determine which combination is the best for your region.

The only vaccinations you need are updated tetanus and polio injections, although some doctors also immunise against yellow fever, should you be planning to travel elsewhere in Africa. Yes, they require vaccination against canine distemper which is fatal to ferrets. If your vet is unused to dealing with ferrets, make sure that he/she uses a type of vaccine that is not derived from ferrets as this will give your ferret distemper! We also recommend dogs be vaccinated for Corona virus and cats vaccinated for Feline leukemia virus. Please ask your veterinarian to indicate on the certificates the expiration date for each vaccine as there is some variation between veterinarians as to the length of time each vaccination is valid. Guinea Pigs stay pretty clean as long as their environment is clean. That means that maintenance will be less with the pig if you clean the cage regularly. I clean the entire cage once a week. In between I clean out dirty corners and top off their bedding. I trim their nails every month...or as needed. If you want you can give them a bath or just dip their rear ends in the sink every few months. Since my Guinea Pigs have long hair...I usually trim it every few months to keep it neat.
