There are generally two types. One calibrated loop will hold 0.01 mL of sample; the other will hold 0.001 mL of sample. If a 0.01-mL loop is used, the number of colonies counted is multiplied by 100. IF the 0.001 mL loop is used the number of colonies counted is multiplied; (can you guess?), 1000.

The frequency of required calibration will vary with individual accuracy requirements and sensor drift.

The RadDetect sensor is tested with a small Cesium source and a DSO to ensure disintegrations are detected. ChatterBlocker includes two bell loops (actually, a silver-plated communion goblet pinged with a fingernail). One loop repeats once per hour; the other repeats each 41 minutes. You can use these alone, or you can combine them to repeat at somewhat unexpected intervals. The bell sound can be used a cue to remind yourself to take a deep breath, relax, and adjust your posture.

No, you can not calibrate the logger yourself. It must be returned to Marathon for calibration. However, some of our larger customers who have metrology laboratories check the logger's calibration against a reference standard in lieu of returning it to Marathon. This depends on your Quality Control procedures. Some companies write into their Standard Operating Procedures that all measuring and controlling instruments must be checked for calibration every 6 or 12 months.

Some Geiger counters, especially older designs, require regular calibration to ensure that their readings are accurate. We are using a linear, three point calibration process. We have three "Calibration Caps" with No, Low, and High readings. The materials being used are thin-films that are fitted into these caps. The caps fit over the laser aperture. The films being used have different levels of an embedded "carotenoid-like" molecule. At least once a year, which is the minimum required by the regulatory agencies such as UL. However, units that are in constant operation more than one shift per day, five days per week should be calibrated every six months. Music Loops are little sniplets of music that line up perfectly to be looped at any length. You select, for instance, a drum loop on one track of your music editing program, a bass track on the next, a couple more guitar and keyboard tracks and voila...you created a song. Very often, loops are used in combination with MIDI tracks or recorded (vocal) tracks to make a song rather than creating the entire song from loops.

Decide if you are making an ambient loop or a rhythmic loop or if you're just making a sample (one shot, not looped). Pick your source. This could be a short part of a song you've already done, a tape fragment, midi sequence, sound of fingers on a chalkboard - just about anything. To create a new loop just make up a line or a wall of noise and record it with an audio editor (Like Cool Edit or Sound Forge for Windows, Sound Hack for a Mac OS, or ? in Linux). Always test your loop.
