We suggest you do not drive or move your car without the instrument cluster in it. Air bag system may need to be reprogrammed, alternator may not charge the battery, and you may even get a speeding ticket not knowing how fast you are traveling. If you decide to drive the car without the speedometer, you solely are responsible for your actions.

Since you are ON campus, and spaces are needed for commuters, you are limited to parking in the spaces designated for residential students. Rain or shine, you must walk to campus, just as they do on thousands of campuses around the world. Commuter students may not park in residential parking, either. You will be given a sticker that will identify your vehicle as residential, and commuters will be given stickers that identify them as commuters.

Yes, and it's quite easy to do. The S and XS models use the same wiring harness so it's literally a matter of taking the S cluster out, and putting in an XS cluster. Expect to pay from $70 - $100 for one from a junkyard. You can also use a cluster from a 1st Generation P'up (1988 - 1995) ? or 1st Generation Rodeo (1990 - 1997), but you should be sure to find one that had a 4 cylinder engine. You can use one from a V-6 equipped truck, but it will require modifications.

I installed a cluster from an 85 Golf in my 89 and it works just fine. A "new" used unit can be installed in a Golf/Jetta in about 45 min, with minimal hand tools. The new gauge cluster will plug right into the existing hardware. It might make life a bit easier if you remove the steering wheel, however, its not necessary.
