To become a substitute teacher, you must obtain a substitute permit. A substitute permit authorizes the holder to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, from preschool to grade 12. The document is valid for one calendar year and may be renewed annually. The holder may not serve as a substitute for any one regular education teacher for more than 30 days during the school year or for any one special education teacher for more than 20 days during the school year.
