Internships provide students with the opportunity to experience the "real world" of forensic science and the crime laboratory. They also provide recent graduates with the relevant experience that crime laboratory directors seek from applicants. Getting an internship in any laboratory and learning about the theory behind the techniques that are employed can be helpful.

There's no magic number, but remember this. You do not undertake internships to "get" yourself into medical school/vet school. You undertake internships as opportunities for your own intellectual growth. Looked at in this way, the answer to this question is quite simple. It's never too early to start growing intellectually: there's nothing wrong with starting before your freshman year.

internship is only important if it is meaningful to the employer you're aiming to get a job with. An internship as a video engineer at a post house can really mean jack-squat when you're trying to get a job as a character animator. Lots of internsh ips ARE meaningless, and that's part of the problem. The minute you start talking about how you filled staplers at your summer internship, the potential employer is just going to go onto the next thing on your resume.

Internships can be either formal, undertaken for credit or as part of an organized internship program, or informal, undertaken in agreement with a practicing professional on an ad hoc basis. Both can be extremely valuable. Some curricula at ESF have a formal requirement that you do an internship. ESF also has formal requirements and paperwork that must be filled out for credit-bearing internships. These can be found on ESF's internship web page.

There are a limited number of teaching internships available to certified students continuing their studies. After one year of successful internship you will have the opportunity for paid employment at the Center and as part of our Mobile Training Team which provides onsite training at other community agencies. Yes. All of these items are included in our Employment Transition Kit.

Some internships will be paid internships and others will be unpaid. The organization providing the internship determines whether or not an intern will be paid. There are some internships where it is possible to receive both payment and credit.  If an internship is unpaid, students are REQUIRED to register for credit for the internship.

Students do school psychology internships full time during the last academic year of their program. Students locate the internships themselves, although a substantial amount of information about internship opportunities is on file in the Department. Internships must be done in a location no more than a day's drive away from IUP, since faculty supervisors will be visiting the site once each semester.
