What satellites do you use and why?
Iceberg FAQ'sThe polar orbiting satellites (the ones that fly overhead) are the NOAA and DMSP satellites. The DMSP satellite is run by the Air Force who makes the data available to researchers. I use both to track and observe the icebergs. Both sets of satellites are U.S. owned and operated. GOES (US), METEOSAT (Europe), and GMS (Japan) are the geostationary satellites. They are great for observing the full disk of the Earth, but not the best near the poles.

Why does my ProMark2 take so long to track satellites?
Magellan Professional GPSWhen the ProMark2 is used for the first time it doesn't have any information about where the satellites are. About 15 minutes of tracking at least one satellite allows the unit to acquire a satellite almanac which contains the rough location of each satellite. After an almanac is acquired, tracking should occur within seconds of turning the unit on. Setting a user position can also help the receiver track faster the first time out. See similar questions...
