Locate th e photo on your computer that you want to use then right click on it with your mouse, then select "save", then select "jpg".

A general rule of thumb is to use gifs for illustrations and images that contain large areas of flat color, and to use jpgs for photographs and images with continuous tones. The jpg format has a very good compression rate, but compression reduces the quality of the image, so experiment until you have the optimal quality/file size.

There are several different types of file formats that you can save your pictures as once they are scanned; one of these file formats is .jpg. We ask that you send your pictures as .jpg files because that is the best quality for photos and for posting them to our site. Please do not send file sizes over 80k. If you have a graphics program like Photoshop or LView Pro, you can use it to save files in a JPG file. If not, a copy/print shop can do it for you. Just remember to bring your photos so they can scan them in.

Normally, tiff is a uncompressed file format. "In computing, JPEG is a commonly used standard method of compression for photographic images. The name JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee who created the standard." High compression ratio JPEG files are not recommended. In other words, we recommend tif, tiff and low compression ratio jpg format image files. PNG is also recommended.

JPEG image format (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the predominant format used by digital cameras. Even professional cameras have a JPEG mode and despite its lossy compression it has become the de facto image format for electronic storage of photographic images. The reason for this is the JPEG compression algorithm's ability to reduce an image file size by 8 or 10 to 1 without any degradation in image quality (to the human eye at normal viewing magnification).

There is no palette in a .jpg. If you have an image with relatively few colors which has been saved as a .jpg, you can decrease color depth to 256 (or 16 or 4), and save the resulting palette.

If the file type appears in the Save dialog but is grayed out, you may need to change the image type. For instance, you can't save an RGB as a GIF (convert to indexed first) or an indexed image to JPEG (convert to RGB first). GIMP comes with full support for a few types built in. If the type you want doesn't appear in file type format of the Open and Save dialogs, you need to check the Plug-in registry to see whether you need to download an optional plug-in.

The short answer: If you are editing the file and plan to reopen it in your image editing program later, you should save it in a lossless format such as TIFF, or one of the other lossless formats supported by your image editor. (See also the discussion of JPEG vs. TIFF below.) If you aren't planning on changing the image at all., you should just leave it in whatever format the camera produced.

JPG/JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is an image file format for storing photographic images which offers substantial reductions in file size for an imperceptible degradation of image quality. Most photo editing applications such as PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro can store images in JPG format. Usually, they allow the user to specify the amount of compression versus the quality of the stored image. Top of Page

A map can be saved as a PDF. To do this, click the "PDF" button in the Map tools toolbar. You can type in a title and caption for your map, and also select the layout. Click the "Create" button when you are satisfied with your map. When the PDF map is displayed use the File/Save button to save the map. The PDF file can be printed.

Navigate to the desired destination by opening the folder that you want your image to be saved to. You can enter the name for the photo in the Save a Copy As dialog box.

The map is in PNG (portable network graphics) format, because our version of PHP3 doesn't have GIF support installed for copyright reasons. I support open-source software, and prefer using PNG anyway. If you can't view PNG files, click on the checkbox marked "Use JPEG format?" to see the map in JPEG format. Because JPEGs aren't as good for line drawing (such as maps), the map appears a bit fuzzier in JPEG mode.

Choose which map you would like to view. You can select any of the maps in the Available Maps section. The default selection is set to Standard Map, which will provide an image of current view. If you wish to have the map shaded with a demographic ariable, then select one of the variables in the list of thematic maps. Highlight the map you wish to use, then click on the Show Map button at the bottom left corner of the page. A new web browser will open with your completed map.

It's possible that your images are actually in some other format though they have a .jpg extension. The confusion lies in the digital header that is imbedded in the image files which may cause uncompressed bitmaps that cannot be recognized or copied to create thumbnails. This may be the result of a camera setting, or may be a function of your image editing software. Save the image again, in .jpg format, and then upload it again into your image hosting folder.

JPG, GIF, TIFF and BMP as well as other bitmapped graphic formats will generally not scale up to the size of a large format flag or banner. If you were to print a large banner with one of those images on it, it is likely to look granulated and unrecognizable. We support EPS and PDF vector formatted images. Many logo and mascot images are created in those formats so that they can look perfect when they are used at any size.
