Electronic Product Code, or EPC, is an electronic tag that contains a unique number. This number identifies one product from another. EPC is often called the next generation of the standard bar code. Like the bar code, EPC uses a numerical system to identify a product. EPC is a number that can be associated with specific product information, such as date of manufacture, origin and destination of shipment. This information provides significant advantages for businesses and consumers.

The product code is the five or more letters to the left of the product description (e.g. for "WAYSS Sampler Set" the product codes is "WAYSS" and the product, in this case, is the Sampler Set for the Ways of Coping Questionnaire).

The EPC is an advanced version of the UPC (Universal Product Code or bar code). Like the UPC, an EPC identifies manufacturer and product style, color and size. The UPC mark is printed on packages and consists of several thick, black vertical lines and a group of numbers underneath. It is used by the manufacturer and stores for inventory control purposes.

First of all check that you have read the code correctly. The font can sometimes be unclear; it is often a good idea to get some one else to verify and read out the code whilst you type it in. If the code is still not being accepted check that the version of Windows named on the product code sticker is the same as that installed on your PC. Windows XP Home codes will not work with Windows XP Professional, and Windows Me codes will not wok with either version of XP.
