There are a number of different mailing list programs, each of which has their own procedure to subscribe to a list. Try sending mail to LISTSERV@<host address>, or MAJORDOMO@<host address>, or LISTPROC@<host address>, where <host address> is the part of the address for the list you're interested in that comes after the @ sign.

There are currently two mailing lists, ptools-perfapi@ptools.org which is a group for general announcements, questions and miscellaneous topics and perfapi-devel@ptools.org which is a discussion group for the developers of PAPI and it receives all CVS update messages (which can be a significant amount of mail!) There's the newsgroup gnu.emacs.gnus (also available as gmane.emacs.gnus.user) which deals with general Gnus questions. The ding mailing list (ding@gnus.org) deals with development of Gnus. Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your email address in the last field then click the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button. From there you can simply click the "Unsubscribe" button. A confirmation mail will be sent to your email address. To confirm the unsubscribe request, simply reply to that message.
