The urine pregnancy test used at Health Services is accurate as early as 7 days after conception and is conclusive at 10 days. The tests conducted under laboratory controls are considered more reliable than "home" pregnancy tests.

We can do an accurate urine test for pregnancy within a week of missing a period. Results are available within five minutes.

Our tests can be used as early as 6 days past ovulation (dpo), when hCG levels should reach approximately 20 mIU, the detectable level. It is recommend to wait slightly longer for increased hCG levels, but no longer than 15 days because hCG levels will be too high.

The reception staff will assist with this request. There is a Lab in our building for your convenience. You may also go to any Quest Diagnostics laboratory facility in Connecticut, once the test has been ordered by the Department. The earliest that a sensitive blood test can pick up any HCG at all is 5-7 days after ovulation. Your quantitative serum beta test can be reliable about 10-12 days after ovulation, if you have not taken a HCG booster. Extremely sensitive home pregnancy tests might in some cases be reliable as soon as 12 dpo. If you have taken a HCG booster, then you may have a reliable test at 14 days past ovulation. The serum beta is the most reliable test.

If the test is faint (in comparison to the control band), the test may be positive, though the presence of hCG in the woman's body - or urine sample - may be low. Patients are asked to avoid strenuous activity that would strain the pelvic area, such as climbing stairs and lifting objects heavier than 15 pounds. Any formal exercise program such as weight lifting aerobics, jogging, etc. should be discussed with the physician. Also, the patient is advised not to take tube baths, douche, insert tampons or have sexual intercourse until the pregnancy test.
