Java 1.1 and earlier releases use one audio format exclusively. The audio file must be in .au format, recorded at 8 KHz, mono, in mu-law encoding. If your audio clip is in a different format (e.g., .wav) or a different frequency it must be converted to the exact specifications above before Java can play it. Support for .wav and other formats is part of the Java Media Framework coming in JDK 1.2. Search at www.yahoo.

If your audio file won't upload to AC, please check the size of your file (it must be under 15 MB) and the file type (MP3 is the preferred file format, but wav, wma, rm and aiff formats are also accepted). There is a substantial difference between CD-ROM discs and CD-R or CD-RW discs. Because of this, there must be differences in the drives used to read these different types of media. Most currently available CD players are capable of reading CD-R and CD-RW discs, but some older models were only designed for use with commercially produced CD-ROM discs. It may be possible to play some brands of CD-R discs in these older players, but we cannot guarantee success.

Sometimes with older computers and very new computers the operating systems have available updates. If you are experiencing problems not described above you might want to try a WindowsUpdate (for PCs only). This is a free service offered by Microsoft that automatically updates your computer's operating system. The archive is all about free access to information, so you should submit file formats that are easily downloadable and/or streamable for other site patrons. We prefer that you submit the highest quality file that you have available, and then we will attempt to create smaller file sizes and formats automatically with our deriver program.

You recorded it on a CD-RW disk. Most newer computer drives read these fine. Very few audio players will read them at all. You recorded the CD as a data CD or as a multi-session CD. Audio players will only read audio CDs, and even on audio CDs, they will only recognise the first "session". Computer drives, OTOH, can cheerfully read data CDs, and can read CDs recorded in multiple sessions.

Make sure you are using CD-R disks, not CD-RW disks - very few CD audio players can recognise CD-RW disks at all. Make sure you are burning single session audio CDs with your software - audio CD players won't, for the most part, recognise data CDs or multi-session CDs. If you are burning single-session audio CDs on CD-R media and they still won't play on your audio CD players, then I'm afraid it looks as if your burner just can't produce disks that your audio players can read.

You can make a reminder containing a keyword to which your sound file is assigned, or you can make a reminder beginning with the command #sound<FULL_PATH_TO_A_FILE>, it will play the specified file without showing a reminder sign on your screen.

Most browsers support the EMBED element for this, provided that the user has a suitable plug-in for the sound file. You can reach a slightly wider audience if you use BGSOUND as well. To avoid problems with browsers that support both, place the BGSOUND in a NOEMBED container: Note that these elements are proprietary and not in any HTML standard. (The HTML standard way of doing this is not well supported.) Be aware that some users find it annoying for music to automatically start playing.

No... and yes. It depends on the Dial Method used for the call. JPT can be used to dial a number at a specified time (for example, triggered by an iCal alarm at a specific time by a script). A script could also start a pre-recorded file (or even text-to-speech) to begin. However, using the modem, speaker, or Bluetooth modem as your Dial Method, the audio will not be transmitted. Most modems, including the modems that ship with iMacs, PowerBooks, iBooks, etc.

Navigate into the Player Settings area with the remote control. Choose Synchronize, then select the other player you want to synchronize with and press the RIGHT button. Both will play the same thing and you can control their synchronized playback from either remote. Go back to the same place and press RIGHT again to unsync.

A#7.5: There are two common sources of problems. The first is due to improper syntax in the inittab file. See the inittab(5) and initd(8) manual pages for the correct syntax. The second common problem is not due to the inittab file, but rather because the command you are trying to invoke is being invoked incorrectly. The way to check if this is the case is to run the command interactively and see what diagnostic messages appear.
