A secret shopper is someone who poses as a regular customer in a designated establishment (Department Store, Restaurant, Amusement Park, etc.) and reports back to the referring company what type of treatment they received.

A "Mystery Shopper" or "Secret Shopper" is someone who is hired by companies and who goes into the client's locations unidentified, posing as a shopper, evaluating specific criteria, completing a questionnaire and leaving feedback, this is then passed on to the client. The person is then paid for the assignment and usually gets reimbursed for their purchase, meal or other item related to the assignment.

The secret shopper test begins by contacting the jeweler by phone, and asking the salesperson for help in deciding on the best quality/price/size of diamond for an engagement ring. Our staff member chooses, for example, a 1.00 carat, G color, VS2 clarity, ideal cut, round brilliant shape diamond. The best mystery shoppers are detail oriented, thorough, observant and objective. Mystery Shoppers must have the ability to remain confidential and must be extremely reliable. All Mystery Shoppers are required to complete detailed reports for each assignment undertaken. This includes taking notes whilst on the assignment and providing a detailed 'debrief' report on the mystery shop once complete.

No formal qualifications are required to join NYFRS but a written test has to be passed before being invited to attend the physical assessments.

We are not looking for any prior experience or special training in our mystery shoppers; in fact, we are specifically looking for the average person's point of view to give our clients feedback on their businesses. We do ask that our shoppers be at least 21 years of age, as many shops request ordering an alcoholic beverage.

For bar shoppers, we are typically looking for someone with extensive bartending or bar management experience, who can accurately gauge pour counts and watch cash handling procedures and monitor waste. Ideally we would look for someone with TIPS or Safe Serve certification, and even better, management experience in bar or lounge operations or loss prevention.

Community convening entails eliciting the various perspectives of participants and working with the group to create an effective response to a situation. Aside from leadership skills for drawing the group together and motivating participation, conveners need to be active listeners, able to understand varying, even conflicting, opinions. This means that conveners must learn to balance the needs of many to accommodate differences and make room for all participants to have a voice.

It takes artistic talent, knowledge of 3 dimensional form, creativity, the ability to work with others, salesmanship, a lot of hard work, and a bit of luck of course.

For short-term workcamps you do not need any specific skills or qualifications unless specified, but individual projects will welcome your life experience and any particular skills you do have that can contribute to the work of the project. The main skills you do need are the ability to live and work cooperatively with a group of other international volunteers, lots of enthusiasm and motivation and the willingness to experience something completely new.

To be a successful freelancer, you should expect to have qualifications and skills comparable to those that a person doing the work as a permanent employee would have. This means, for example, that if you are seeking work as a freelance editor you should have sufficient editing skills that you could be hired as an editor full time. If you do not have the skills, you will need to get them. There are many courses available in such fields as editing, writing, and design.
