There's a hum in my system. Why?

ADCOM FAQs
There are lots of reasons why a system can ''hum''. Some real common ones are the ''noise'' caused by Halogen lights or light dimmer switches. Another common problem is a ''ground loop'' caused by a cable TV connection. To check if this is the problem, unhook the cable feed from your system. If the hum goes away, you've found your problem. The problem can be solved by use of a ''ground loop isolator'' which can be purchased at any electronic supply store. See similar questions...

What can I do to minimize lamp hum?

Dimmers & Lighting Controls FAQ's
Occasionally, lamps may generate noise when dimmed. This noise is caused by vibration of the lamp filament as the dimmer rapidly switches the lamp on. Lamp buzz, if it occurs,, is generally noisiest at the mid-range (50%) dimming level. We suggest the following solutions: See similar questions...

Why do my light bulbs sometime hum?

Dimmers & Lighting Controls FAQ's
Light bulbs hum when filaments vibrate. Using a lower wattage or different brand bulb will usually prevent or reduce light bulb hum. See similar questions...

Does the Highlander pickup hum if the amplifier does not have AC ground?

Highlander Musical Audio Products. Frequently Asked Question...
No. Our coaxial pickup and preamplifier are specially shielded so that even without a ground the pickup will not hum. Some of our customers live or perform in countries that do not have AC ground. They are very happy to report that Highlander pickups are exceptionally clean and perform perfectly all over the world. The Magnophonic Pickup for the National Tricone is a magnetic pickup (not one of our coaxial pickups). See similar questions...

What is a Hum/Sun motor/ generator system ?

FAQs Page
This is currently what we think will the basic building block of the Free Electricity Program. We intend to couple a 50HP Hummingbird motor with a 30KW Sundance generator for installation on a typical private home. We have other technologies we could pull into service if for some reason we can't use the motor. BWT holds rights to use 7 other technologies different than the REMAT (Rare Earth Magnetic Amplification Technology) motor. These are all synonymous. See similar questions...

What should I do if I hear 60 cycle hum in my system?

Radial X-Amp FAQ
Try depressing the ground lift switch at the XLR input side. This will disconnect the ground from the mixer and leave you with a direct-coupled ground at the primary guitar amplifier. See similar questions...

Why does it hum when sailing?

Ensenada 20 - Frequently Asked Questions
Especially when beating (headed toward the wind at about 40 degrees from dead on), the turbulence generated by the keel, causes the winch cable to resonate. This may be reduced somewhat, by slackening the cable a little. I've grown fond of the hum. It works like an audible knotmeter. The faster you're going, the louder and higher pitched the hum. Just before hitting hull speed, ours reverberates between a low and high pitch. You rarely get the hum on broad reach or run. See similar questions...

Why do my fluorescent lights hum?

HD Electric Lincoln HS Homebuilding
This is due to the ballast inside the fixture. It takes a few minutes for the ballast to warm up and most of the time people finish with whatever they are doing and turn the light off before it has time to warm up and stop humming. See similar questions...

Why does my pump hum?

Tabletop Fountains Lava Rock Fountain Supplies Inline and Su...
Everyone loves a humming bird, but not a humming pump! Some pumps just plain hum...but try to find a pump that has either suction cup feet or rubber attached to the bottom of the pump. If it doesn't then try this. Get some rubber matting (The kind you would use in the bottom of your sink, they make a thin mesh mat.) from the housewares section in your favorite department store and cut a size to match the bottom of your pump. This will help absorb the running of the motor of the pump. See similar questions...

How does "Hum and Buzz" get into my system?

JENSEN TRANSFORMERS, INC. - FREQUENTLY ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Hum and buzz (50Hz/60Hz and it's harmonics) occur in unbalanced systems when currents flow in the cable shield connections between different pieces of equipment. Hum and buzz occur in balanced systems when the ground voltage differences between different pieces of equipment are so large that the Common Mode Rejection of the input stage of the receiving device is insufficient to reduce the noise signal to in-audible levels. The most common source is the capacitance between the A.C. See similar questions...

What is a ground loop and what is ground hum?

Frequently Asked Questions | Panamax
A ground loop occurs when a piece of equipment or a system is connected to different grounds (e.g. AC and coax or data lines). When the data lines, coax lines or AC lines are not connected to the same grounding point there can be a difference in voltage between them when they enter your electrical equipment. The differing ground lines are interconnected within the system components. (TVs, Amplifiers, Receivers etc. See similar questions...

Is it possible to effectively hum and growl on a digital wind controller?

WIND CONTROLLER FAQ (UPDATED)
Indeed it can have some form of effect, but your results will vary on several factors. There is nothing like the speed of a true analog sensor directly coupled to a true analog synth via control voltage. MIDI simply has its speed limits and the receiving MIDI synths have their limits too with regard to this. Digital/MIDI receiving synths often have smoothing which smooths out the stepping you get with MIDI's 128 discreet steps. Of course, the byproduct of smoothing is a loss of speed. What causes a fluorescent light fixture to hum?

Frequently Asked Questions - Lighting Supply Company
All fluorescent lights require a ballast to function. Both magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts give off a slight humming noise; harmonics is the technical term. By design an electronic ballast has reduced harmonics and therefore the hum is less noticeable than when using a magnetic ballast. If the hum is louder than usual the ballast may need to be replaced. Is some hum normal when the volume control is turned up?

Reverend FAQ
Some hum is normal when the VOL or REV is over 50%. This will be noticeable in a small quiet room. However, excessive hum can be caused by electronic devices located near the amp or on the same circuit such as fridges, fluorescent lights, computers, light dimmers, aquarium pumps, etc. Hum can vary with different outlets, rooms or buildings. Will the dimming process cause my lights to hum?

Blue Kangaroo - Frequently Asked Questions
Our systems use the highest-grade TRIAC electronics for the smoothest dimming, and problems are rare. If humming is a problem on a specific light fixture, it is usually due to the bulb. Replacing the bulb with a higher quality or different wattage bulb (with an adjusted dimmed setting) normally fixes the problem. See similar questions...

Will Tunatic recognize the tune if I sing/hum it?

Ringtone Finder
Currently, no. Tunatic can only identify recorded music. Indeed, when Tunatic analyzes a song, it takes its timbre, not only its melody, into account. On the other hand, this selectivity allows Tunatic to discriminate between different versions or mixes of the same song. You're looking for midomi, a melody-based search engine.
