There are lots of reasons why a system can ''hum''. Some real common ones are the ''noise'' caused by Halogen lights or light dimmer switches. Another common problem is a ''ground loop'' caused by a cable TV connection. To check if this is the problem, unhook the cable feed from your system. If the hum goes away, you've found your problem. No. Our coaxial pickup and preamplifier are specially shielded so that even without a ground the pickup will not hum. Some of our customers live or perform in countries that do not have AC ground. Especially when beating (headed toward the wind at about 40 degrees from dead on), the turbulence generated by the keel, causes the winch cable to resonate. Everyone loves a humming bird, but not a humming pump! Some pumps just plain hum...but try to find a pump that has either suction cup feet or rubber attached to the bottom of the pump. If it doesn't then try this. Get some rubber matting (The kind you would use in the bottom of your sink, they make a thin mesh mat.) from the housewares section in your favorite department store and cut a size to match the bottom of your pump. A ground loop occurs when a piece of equipment or a system is connected to different grounds (e.g. AC and coax or data lines). Indeed it can have some form of effect, but your results will vary on several factors. There is nothing like the speed of a true analog sensor directly coupled to a true analog synth via control voltage. MIDI simply has its speed limits and the receiving MIDI synths have their limits too with regard to this. Digital/MIDI receiving synths often have smoothing which smooths out the stepping you get with MIDI's 128 discreet steps. Of course, the byproduct of smoothing is a loss of speed. All fluorescent lights require a ballast to function. Both magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts give off a slight humming noise; harmonics is the technical term. By design an electronic ballast has reduced harmonics and therefore the hum is less noticeable than when using a magnetic ballast. If the hum is louder than usual the ballast may need to be replaced. Our systems use the highest-grade TRIAC electronics for the smoothest dimming, and problems are rare. If humming is a problem on a specific light fixture, it is usually due to the bulb.
