Pink Eye, also known as Viral Conjunctivitis (the clear lining that covers the white of the eye), is a very common infection caused by many viruses. Symptoms include swelling, tearing, and redness of the eye. Treatment consists of making the patient feel comfortable while letting the virus run its course.

Pink eye" or conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the covering of the eyeball and lining of the eye socket. There is usually associated eye drainage which may be clear to greenish-yellow and present in varying amounts during the course of the illness. Causes range from a benign viral infection which requires no treatment to a more serious bacterial infection which is very contagious requiring proper antibiotics.

Yes, viral conjunctivitis (pink-eye) is very common and is extremely contagious. Avoid touching eyes with your hands, wash hands frequently, do not share towels, and avoid work, school or daycare activities for a least five days or as long as discharge is present.

The Pink Book is the Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization Patient Instruction Booklet provided by the American EPD Society and written by W. A. Shrader, Jr. M.D. This booklet has been prepared for patients of physician members of the American EPD Society. The pink ribbon, which is the international symbol for breast cancer awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, were introduced into the UK ten years ago. Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to increase awareness of breast cancer so that women know what the symptoms are and seek help early enough, which increases their chance of survival. It also raises vital funds for breast cancer research.

Unfortunately, the pink ribbon is a symbol that has been co-opted by big business to sell products. Many of these companies only give a small portion of the proceeds to breast cancer organizations. None of the money goes to breast cancer prevention. Worse yet, many of the companies who profit from breast cancer may actually be contributing to the problem. Yoplait Yogurt for example, sells yogurts with pink tops every October.

In the early phases of AMD, sometimes the signs and symptoms may appear in only one eye. However, AMD is a “bilateral” disease meaning that you have it in both eyes. In other words, the signs of the disease eventually appear in both eyes.

Eye cancer is a very rare kind of cancer that starts in or on the eye (on the surface, on the iris, or within the eye beneath the retina) or in the skin around the eye (the eyelid). Because it is so rare, it is best for a person diagnosed with eye cancer to seek treatment from someone who specializes in this field. A person can ask their doctor to refer them to an eye cancer specialist.

Eye exams are recommended periodically, with the interval differing for various age groups. In the first three years of infancy, a child should have vision checked along with normal pediatric checkups. Between the ages of three and six (the most crucial period of eye development) an eye exam should be scheduled every year or two. After that period, until adulthood, exams should be scheduled as necessary. During the twenties one should have at least one exam.

Certain species of airborne bacteria gravitate towards and thrive in a moist environment, such as showerheads, sink drains, tiles, and dog dishes. These slimes are naturally occurring and are generally harmless. The best way to avoid this problem is to keep these surfaces free from the bacterial film through regular cleaning utilizing Lysol or a chlorine-based product.
