We have installed one of these engines into an FIA (very similar) chassis. It was a difficult and expensive project, requiring new reduced-width footboxes, steering column and pedals. The oil-to-water intercooler must be removed from the block and a custom block-off plate made. New fuel feed and return lines must be made, and a very expensive wiring harness is required.

The ignition module is a small black box about the size of a packet of cigarettes that is bolted to the underside of the ignition coil. It has a seven pin connector plugged into it and takes inputs from the crank position sensor, the distributor sensor and the ECU and charges the low voltage side of the ignition coil. Should you wish to replace it follow these instructions. The module sits underneath the coil at the front right of the engine. There are two leads connected to the top of the coil.

Mount the electronic ignition module to the breaker plate at position indicated with the screw provided. The QwikData is designed to receive a tach signal from an ignition system such as an MSD. There are two wires in the wiring harness marked 'TACH' (a purple and a black wire). The purple wire should be connected to the tach output of the ignition system and the black wire should be connected to a good ground.

Electronic ignition has been around a long time; it was invented by Chrysler and used on their cars starting in 1971 or 1972, but didn't hit some automakers until years later (Volkswagen in 1980 - when they already had multiple-point electronic fuel injection!). Take it to a engine machine shop, if they don't have a welder to fix it, they can point you in the right direction. Almost all the WW2 GPW engine blocks have a crack in the same area. There is a powder welding system out now that can repair the block and not be able to see the weld. I had a 1946 CJ-2A column shift as a teenager from 1957 until about 1963. One of the features was a cracked block in roughly the same area as described in the Q&A above.
