The primary purpose of table partitioning is to improve the performance of concurrent inserts to a table by reducing contention for the last page of a page chain. Partitioning can also potentially improve performance by making it possible to distribute a table's I/O over multiple database devices. By default, ASE stores a table's data in one double-linked set of pages called a page chain.

MBR disks support only four partition table entries. If more partitions are wanted, a secondary structure known as an extended partition is necessary. Extended partitions can then be subdivided into one or more logical disks. By convention, Windows creates MBR disk partitions and logical drives on cylinder boundaries based on the reported geometry, although this information no longer has any relationship to the physical characteristics of the hardware (disk driver or RAID controller).

Soft Partitioning as available with OpenVMS Alpha Galaxy is not available with OpenVMS 8.3 Integrity. This capability will be forthcoming with the introduction of HP Integrity Virtual Machines (HPVM) in a subsequent release of OpenVMS Integrity. It is currently planned for 2007.

This has been the subject of some rather heated "discussions" in the group recently. If nothing else, it's fair to say that there's no consensus on what is the best way to set up your partitions. What Linux allows you to do is assign certain directories to certain storage devices (which include hard disk partitions). So for example, you could assign directory A to partition X and directory B to partition Y. Any file created in A gets stored on partition X, any created in B goes onto Y.

There are two main advantages to partitioning: speed and file size. If you are able to partition your hard disk so that temporary files and the applications that create them are in one partition, and more permanent files and the applications that create them in another partition, you are diminishing the time the Mac has to wade through fragmented files to read them.

Do the caches support persistent connections? Break up the data file into multiple files and simultaneously run each of these files as a separate bcp job against one table. Use the batch option of bcp in. For example, after every 100 rows, force a commit. Here is the syntax of this command: Each time a transaction commits, ASE randomly assigns a new partition for the next insert. This, in turn, reduces the probability of page lock contention.

Detachable disks are commonly expected to migrate between machines or simply to be unavailable to the operating system at times. Examples of detachable disks are IEEE 1394 disks, which can be easily disconnected by the end user, or Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS) shared disks, which move between nodes in a cluster. Windows XP supports only MBR partitioning on detachable disks. For more about removable media, see questions 19-21.

The glass we use for partitioning is quite thick and we toughen each panel as standard policy - it would take a very large impact for it to smash. For Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 only (for Itanium-based systems), fixed disks are partitioned using GPT partitioning. GPT disks can be converted to MBR disks only if all existing partitioning is first deleted, with associated loss of data.
