Can tea be decaffeinated?

Rec.food.drink.tea FAQ
There are some brands of decaffeinated tea on the market, but unfortunately their quality is rarely very high. It is very difficult (perhaps impossible) to remove caffeine from tea without degrading its quality. On the other hand, it is possible to prepare ordinary tea so as to remove most (not all) of the caffeine from the finished product. Caffeine is very water-soluble, more so than many of the flavor components in tea.

After searching for a non-toxic organic process, Numi is excited to have full leaf teas that have been decaffeinated using a Super Critical CO2 extraction process sometimes referred to as "Effervescence". No. Coffee is decaffeinated with toxic solvents, like methylene chloride and ethyl acetate. In theory, these solvents shouldn't remain after decaffeination, but they often do. How is coffee decaffeinated?

Koobies Coffee FAQs - Coffees, Teas, Syrups, Ghirardelli Cho...
The decaffeination process starts by increasing the moisture content of the green (unroasted) coffee beans, to make it easier to remove the caffeine. Then one of several solvents is used to extract the caffeine. The solvents are safe and meet FDA standards for coffees sold in the U.S. The flavor of decaffeinated coffee depends on the quality of the beans, the blend, the roasting technique and the decaffeination method. All decaffeination methods remove 97-99% of the caffeine. See similar questions...

How much caffeine is there in tea?

Culinary Teas - Frequently Asked Questions
The caffeine content in tea averages about 1/3 the amount found in equal liquid quantities of coffee, about 28-44 mg of caffeine per cup. It is only a myth that green and white teas have less caffeine. The leaves contain the same amount of caffeine but you tend to brew green teas for a shorter period of time and this will lessen the amount of caffeine that ends up in the brew. Is there more than one type of Decaffeinated coffee?

Peerless Coffee & Tea #1 Coffee in San Francisco
Green beans are soaked in hot water to draw out the caffeine. After soaking, the water is drained off and treated with methylene chloride, a solvent that binds with the caffeine. The solvent and caffeine are removed by heating the solution and the remaining water is returned to the beans and reabsorbed. The green beans are then roasted at temperatures above 400 F and since methylene chloride evaporates at 100 F, there is no trace remaining in the finished product. See similar questions...

Is tea good for you? Is green tea rich in antioxidants?

Frequently Asked Questions
There's a lot of folklore and literature about the health benefits of tea. This is unfortunate, because tea is toxic and addictive. I advise against all tea, including herbal, black, oolong, and green. Herbal tea is not really tea, but a brew of herbs, which supposedly are beneficial, but actually are quite toxic. Black, oolong, and green tea all come from the same plant. Black tea has more caffeine; green tea has more antioxidants; and oolong tea is intermediate between black tea and green tea.
