The kalimbas all come tuned to the key of G, except for the karimba (with an "R"), which is very close to the key of A. However, you can tune them any old way you want. Use an electronic tuner to tell you if the note is in tune or not. The ALTO Fundamentals Book and the TREBLE Fundamentals Book will show you how to tune in a bit more detail.

My favorite is the ALTO. With exactly two octaves (the bottom note and the top note are both G, the root of the G major scale), it is easy to understand, the tines are wide, and you have the resonant box to make funky wah-wah sounds. Yesterday’s vehicles needed constant tuning which included parts replacement as well as many adjustments, engine timing, points adjustments and carburetor adjustments. Today’s vehicles still require the replacement of parts such as spark plugs, air and fuel filters, pcv valve, ignition wires and distributor caps and rotors (when applicable) plus throttle plate and bore cleaning. OK, first thing is to grow your thumb nails. They will act as your picks and protect your thumb flesh. After a while, you will get some caluses which will help. With nails and caluses, I am able to play kalimba for 5-6 hours a day without experiencing any pain. Singing out of tune means that you are not singing the pitch accurately- you are either "flat" (too low) or "sharp" (too high). Often singers who belt with too much chest voice sing flat-a common result of carrying too much weight up and reaching for high notes. Yes, by which I mean that I set the frequencies of the major resonances of the instrument to specific targets that I've developed over the years. A piano is hard to tune because it has more than 250 strings and they are held under very high tension, which means that the tuning pins they wrap around have to be set in a strong wooden block very tightly; and THAT means that you have to have a special wrench to turn them up or down.
