What are you doing to prevent pollution of our aquifers?

FAQ-Lab
Since 1990, the SCWA has been in the forefront of aquifer protection by actively pursuing polluters, shutting them down and requiring remediation and restitution. We have also enlarged our wellfields by acquiring larger and larger sites. We sponsor educational programs in local schools and a special research program at Stony Brook University (the Long Island Groundwater Research Institute was conceived, among other things, to research groundwater pollution issues).

What can be done to prevent pollution?

Contact information
Did you know that your home and office contribute to the greenhouse effect? Energy used in our everyday activities -- turning on electrical appliances, driving cars, and heating and cooling our homes -- is responsible for air pollution that contributes to climate change. Technologies are available today that can cut this energy use significantly and, at the same time, improve our quality of life. Preventing pollution is as easy as looking for the ENERGY STAR Label. What can I do to help prevent water pollution?

Surfers Against Sewage - Not just Surfers, Not just Sewage
Never flush anything down the toilet other than poo, pee and paper. Bag it and bin it. Flushed items such as cotton buds or sanitary towels can either cause a blockage leading to a raw sewage overflow or may pass through the sewage system and end up on the beach. Many household cleaning products that end up down our drains contain chemicals that are harmful to the marine environment. Use eco-friendly alternatives. Never drop any litter on the beach. Become oil-wise! you can see from the list of land-based sources and activities, and also from the sea-based sources when it is a matter of recreational boating, individuals and households can certainly contribute to the important efforts to minimize the input of hydrocarbons/oils to the marine environment. Be very careful with what you do with oil-containing waste from your household. See similar questions...

What's being done to prevent stormwater pollution?

Frequently Asked Questions
Pollution prevention programs have historically focused on industrial properties, such as factories and sewage treatment plants, which were considered major sources of water pollution. Despite the success of industrial pollution prevention programs, many pollutants still enter our rivers and lakes through the storm drain system. See similar questions...

Are coal seams aquifers?

Coal Bed Methane Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Water flows through fractures (or cleats) in the coal seam and if the cleat system is well developed and has enough water to pump and produce an economically viable and feasible water supply, the seam can be an aquifer. Coal seams are the most regionally continuous geologic unit in the Powder River Basin and have aquifer characteristics equal to or better than sandstones, so are frequently targeted for water-well completions. What can we do to prevent air pollution from combustion processes?

FAQ Air treatment
During incomplete combustion of a fuel, air pollutants can be released. Many of these pollutants cause environmental problems. An example of an air pollutant that is emitted during combustion processes is sulphur dioxide. To prevent this problem we can switch over to fuels that contain less to no sulphur. We have been reviewing this problem for quite some time now and we have already switched on to natural gas instead of fuel oil for energy conversion, in most cases. See similar questions...

What measures can we take to prevent air pollution by traffic?

FAQ Air treatment
Traffic is the largest source for the emission of greenhouse gasses. A number of measures can be taken to prevent emissions of air pollutants by traffic. Instead of using a diesel- or gasoline-based engine, we can use engines that work on a different fuel type. There are opportunities to make cars drive by using gas, hot air, steam or hydrogen as a car fuel, or by letting cars drive on electricity, for example through solar cells. See similar questions...

How do you calculate the air pollution that customers prevent?

Green Mountain Energy Company: FAQs
Even though a lot of the calculations you might read on this web site are based on the "typical" or "average" customer in a state, it is pretty simple to calculate for yourself. To calculate the CO2 emissions you avoid, we simply multiply your monthly electric usage (in kWh) times the percentage of new renewable generation in your product, times the CO2 emission rate of typical system power in your area. CDC does research to try to find the causes of birth defects. Some people at CDC work in a lab doing basic science research to find answers. For example, we may study how chemicals in the air or water or land might harm a developing baby. Others at CDC are "epidemiologists" who look at all types of birth defects. They try to figure out what babies with certain birth defects have in common. They might study people's genes, their use of certain drugs, or their behaviors. See similar questions...

What about pollution?

FAQ - Bytesmiths
Unlike biodiesel, which has been extensively studied and found to have vast improvements in emmissions compared to petro-diesel, WVO has not been formally studied at all, as far as I can tell. Part of the problem is that WVO is not a consistent, repeatable fuel, so it's impossible to draw conclusions about what emissions any given restaurant may produce. I've found only one study that concerns SVO, using pure rapeseed oil, which is not what is in your typical dumpster. See similar questions...
