Arcade games for MAME are commonly called ROMS. ROMS actually contain the data downloaded from the original arcade. Because of this they play just like the original arcade games.

After you install MAME, and bring up the program, you will see all the games it supports (currently over 600 games). You put the zipped versions of the ROMs in the c:\mame\roms\ directory (given the fact that you installed MAME in the c:\mame\ directory. MAC users, simply put the ROMs into the ROMs folder. of v. 0.31 (the current version of MAME is v. 0.33), MAME does not require that you unzip the ROM's in order to play them.

In the world of emulation, things are not perfect. Mimicking the functionings of an arcade machine or a home console is not easy, as the emulator's designer does not have access to the original information and blueprints used to design the arcade/home console s/he is trying to emulate. So, from time to time, a game ROM will not work correctly on an emulator. This applies mostly to console emulators.

Sorry, no. MAME™ on its own, without the ROMS, can't really do much and the ROMS without an emulator can't do anything but take up space. Put them together and you have a complete package. Distribute that package and you're asking for legal difficulties. The MAME™ development team wisely insists that the two not be distributed together and that's enough for me.

With very few exceptions MAME ROMS play exactly like the original arcade games. You can successfully use the same strategy on Centipede you did as a kid, or the same strategy to beat other games.

A ROM can be found many places. On Usenet newsgroups, on FTP sites, on IRC, and most importantly on web sites.

Copying devices are a widely used form of backup that you plug into your game system and your computer. You stick the game into the device like normal, and it copies the ROM from the catridge to your computer. This does no damage of any sort to the actual game. yes and no. emulators cause no damage of any kind and violate no copyrights, so therefore they are legal. roms can be legal and illegal. it's kind of a long explanation, we will get into detail with it later.

Linux supports the ISO 9660 (CD-ROM) file system with Rock Ridge extensions (formerly known as "High Sierra". Several vendors provide Debian GNU/Linux in this format. Warning: When installing from CD-ROM, it is usually not a good idea to choose dselect's cdrom access method. This method is usually very slow.

Sound Ideas produces several Podcasting & Web Development Products. All wav files on these products can be accessed from both PC and Mac platforms. Mac users can easily access the wav files (for use with software applications like Macromedia Flash), through use of QuickTime 4 (installed with current Macintosh operating systems), or by using an audio editing package like Sound Forge (available from http://www.sonicfoundry.com).

For the MAME™ ROMs, I use the latest version of ClrMAME Pro not only to verify the ROMs themselves but also the .zip archives that contain them. Regarding the Good and TOSEC sets, I use GoodWindows with the appropriate database for each set and TUGID for the TOSECs. All of the files for these sets have been extracted from their zipfiles, renamed/verified then zipped back up. This was the most accurate way I could think of to be sure of what I have.

With an emulator for the system the ROM runs on. NESticle plays NES ROMs, ZSNES plays SMC(Super Nintendo) ROMs, and so forth. Usually, just open the ROM in the GUI (Load ROM) or type emulator gamename at the DOS prompt, where emulator is the name of the emulator and gamename is the name of the ROM image. Again it comes down to bandwidth and resources. No other sites that do not do what we do offer Sega CD and other large ISOs for this exact reason, it is just too big a drain and too costly. Charging a small one time fee prevents freeloaders from draining the server to download games they are never going to play, just so they can have it. It also gives the site the ability to upgrade to larger hard drives and more bandwidth for everyone.
