As tempting as it may be to use ALL the wax in the jar, you need to stop burning your container candle when the wax level reaches ? " from the bottom. If you continue to burn your candle, you run the risk of the glass container breaking or possibly shattering.

The first time that you light the candle, you should allow it to burn until it has a complete layer of melted wax across the top of your candle. (This layer is called the melt pool) When putting the flame of a candle out, you should either use a wick dipper, or if you must blow the candle out, then put your finger up between you and the candle, then blow. This will help prevent pieces of burned wick from flying into your candle wax.

You can use a candle holder, a ceramic container, or a glass dish.  We suggest covering any dishes you use in aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Whatever you choose to hold the candle, it must be fireproof, and it must hold or contain the candle securely until it is burned all the way out.

The black you see is carbon. An excessively large flame will produce carbon due to lack of sufficient oxygen from the air in the jar to provide complete combustion. The updraft of hot gases from combustion hinders diffusion of air into the jar and that starves the flame of oxygen. The key for that perfect burning candle is wick maintenance. The wick must be trimmed to no more than 1/4" throughout the candle life. The candle can be burned for several hours without trimming.

There is no reason to burn your gel candle to the very bottom. You may risk a potential fire problem if you do. Burn the candle to about 1/2" from the bottom.

Before you light your candle, you should ask yourself if you have ample time to let your candle burn for a sufficient amount of time. For example, if you continually burn your 16 oz. Apothecary jar candle for 1-2 hours at a time, it will not be enough time to create a wax melt pool for the entire diameter of the jar, therefore, it will only burn down the center, leaving wax around the jar.

It's all personal preference of course, but I use a specially anointed white candle to light all others. When I'm done, I either allow the ritual candle to burn itself out or I use a snuffer. It depends on the spell or ritual the candle was used in. What I never do is blow the candle out. In my practice, it's something of an affront to the spirits of the South to do that.

We ordinarily don't give this area of candle extinguishment much thought but there is a correct way. The best way to blow out a candle is to hold your finger in front of the flame and blow at your finger. The air will flow around your finger and extinguish the candle flame from both sides preventing hot wax from spattering. While on the subject, to reduce after burn wick smoldering, continue to blow until the wick glow is extinguished. This will prevent smoking of the wick upon extinguishing.

Use a non-flammable instrument and dip the wick into the melted wax. Then reposition your wick to the center. This will prevent your wick from smoking.

What you're seeing is soot. This problem can be eliminated if you trim your wick(s) every time before you light your candle, to ?". If soot builds up inside the container, after you have extinguished the flame and the wax has cooled, spray some Windex on a paper towel and wipe out the inside of the container. I would not spray Windex directly in the jar. Wipe over the cleaned area with a water dampened paper towel afterward. Allow the container to dry thoroughly before relighting.

No. This is a common misunderstanding. Remember, a candle is a solid not a liquid. Most liquids will lose their fragrance if left uncovered. Examples of this would include perfumes and colognes. Pillars have a memory! The first time you burn your pillar, set its memory by leaving it burning one hour for every inch of diameter. Failure to properly set your pillar's memory will cause it to form a tunnel that burns all the way to the bottom. Generally your pillar should not be burned for more than six hours at a time to avoid over-warming the sides and causing them to cave in.

Razor burn or 'redneck' affects about half of all men that shave. It is the result of minor skin abrasions caused by the friction of the razor as it passes over the microscopic folds and ridges of the face.
