What are the disadvantages with CNC machining?

Amalgam Solid Rapid Prototyping - CNC Machining FAQ
In essence, the only disadvantage of CNC machining compared to other RP processes is in the lead-time. Since CNC machining involves CAM programming, much time is spent programming toolpaths- the more complex a part is, such as deep 3D surfaces, bosses and snap details, the longer it takes to program. Also, if materials harder than plastics are used, longer periods of machining time are required.

What are other benefits of CNC machining?

Amalgam Solid Rapid Prototyping - CNC Machining FAQ
The most evident advantage is the tolerance and accuracy exhibited by CNC machines. The paths taken by the tool bits do not have to follow a 2D profile like other RP processes. For example, it can cut away at a material up and down a sloping profile in any degree specified. Each cutting path can also be programmed to be as close as 0.1mm apart (in comparison, SLA creates only horizontal layers of 0.25 mm at best). See similar questions...

Can I specify special materials for CNC machining?

Amalgam Solid Rapid Prototyping - CNC Machining FAQ
If the plastic material requested is not common ABS, PC, Acrylic, Nylon or Delrin, or if a specific color is requested, it is still possible by injection molding a block of your specified material and then CNC machining the block. Contact us for details. See similar questions...

Q - What do I need to get started if I have no knowledge of cnc machining?

Find the CAM(computer aided Machining) software that will best make your cnc machining most efficient. Determine if nesting parts on the desired size machine will be cost effective. Always think bigger but in your budget. Find the Controlling software that will take the G-code and transfer motion instructions to the motor. Will you need the machine to be as accurate to the diameter of the average human hair? (.003) inches. See similar questions...

How is CNC machining different from other rapid-prototyping processes?

Amalgam Solid Rapid Prototyping - CNC Machining FAQ
Unlike the building of layers in other RP processes, CNC machining cuts away at a solid block of material to create the final model. The material used in CNC machining can range from soft materials like foam and plastic to hardened steel. Therefore, it is by far the best method for functional testing of prototypes when actual materials used for eventual mass production are utilized during the machining. See similar questions...

With the benefits in CNC machining, why is it not as common as other RP processes?

Amalgam Solid Rapid Prototyping - CNC Machining FAQ
Unlike CNC machining, the entire prototyping process in other RP methods is controlled by the machines and their software. It is efficient without much human input, and models are created quickly and predictably. They can be operated in an office environment, as they are 'clean' in their processes, without generating dust, particles and waste typical in CNC machining. Therefore, most companies in the U.S. prefer the use of these modern RP methods in creating prototypes. See similar questions...

What is CNC?

DAK Engineering
CNC is an acronym for "Computer Numerical Control." It refers specifically to the control system only, but in this day and age has come to be a generic term for all programmable machine tools that use an electronic computer. Briefly, it is the means whereby the motion of some form of cutting tool is directed by a computer to produce a manufactured product. Those that have done work on lathes or similar tools before are aware that making a part frequently involves a series of repetitive motions. See similar questions...

Can secondary machining operations on an existing part be done?

Abrasive Waterjet Cutting Tools - Frequently Asked Questions
The optional OMAX Precision Optical Locator (POL) makes secondary machining on existing parts easy (for more information, see the POL Spec Sheet). You can also do secondary operations on existing parts by cutting a "square" from a plate of steel, then sliding the parts into the corner of the square, which provides a known reference point. The OMAX Controller also allows up to 100 user-specified home locations, which are provides multiple tooling locations on a single machine. See similar questions...

What Are Some disadvantages of VoIP?

Voice-Over-Internet Protocol
If you're considering replacing your traditional telephone service with VoIP, there are some possible differences: Some VoIP services don't work during power outages and the service provider may not offer backup power. Not all VoIP services connect directly to emergency services through 9-1-1. For additional information, see www.voip911.gov. See similar questions...

What it's machining properties?

Frequently Asked Questions - South Pine, Nelson New Zealand
The superior machining properties and its ease of moulding, turning, planing, joining and furniture manufacture are strong features of NZ pine. Comprehensive trials conducted at NZFRI, in the United Kingdom and by the University of California have shown that New Zealand pine compares very favourably with softwood species commonly used in Europe, North America & Asia for higher value products. Yes. See similar questions...

Can I go canoeing at CNC?

Chippewa Nature Center Frequently Asked Questions
We have one access point to the Chippewa River, and one to the Pine River -- both may be used by the public to either launch or land non-motorized boats. The Pine River site is located at the end of Hubert Road, near the confluence of the two rivers. The Chippewa River site is located just downstream of the confluence, along the Homestead Road. The ponds at CNC are not open to canoeing. See similar questions...

Can I fish at CNC?

Chippewa Nature Center Frequently Asked Questions
Fishing is allowed at CNC only in specific, staff-led programs. However, you may access the rivers (Pine and Chippewa) at our canoe landings and fish in the river, which is public property. See similar questions...
