This is a database of spacecraft models to be used for rendering and animation. These models have been generated from CAD files and blueprints of various Earth-orbiting and interplanetary spacecraft. All of these models are in the public domain and are freely available to all; you should refer to the image use policy at the bottom of this page if you want to use them. Models are provided in whatever formats are available (mostly SGI Inventor).

Not all JPL spacecraft have ephemeris files that can be plugged in to the simulator. Efforts continue to do this. Also, some spacecraft orbit close to their parent body and aren't fully appropriate for the simulator (their ephemerides are very large, for example). Irregular body rendering is a capability the simulator does not yet have.

Being in the right place at the right time is the major factor in determining the length of time of Stardust's journey. However, getting to the right place requires moving great distances at precise rates of travel. The spacecraft and comet need to encounter each other at similar speeds, so that the comet particles do not strike the spacecraft with such force that they destroy it.

The spacecraft will be collecting interstellar dust samples, using the B-side of the aerogel collector in the mission while traveling to the comet at certain points. The spacecraft is mainly powered by its solar array, which includes one solar panel covering a total area of 2.15 X 1.8 square meters, generating 700W power. The panels are made of materials rated to withstand extreme temperatures ~ 119 ?C to –165 ?C. The power produced by the solar array is stored in a Lithium-ion battery, and then distributed from the battery to the spacecraft subsystems. The power system is designed to support various phases of the mission.
