Can it be too hot or too cold to place new concrete?
Cement & Concrete FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) | Po...Temperature extremes make it difficult to properly cure concrete. On hot days, too much water is lost by evaporation from newly placed concrete. If the temperature drops too close to freezing, hydration slows to nearly a standstill. Under these conditions, concrete ceases to gain strength and other desirable properties. In general, the temperature of new concrete should not be allowed to fall below 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) during the curing period.
When is it too hot to place concrete?
FAQsIt depends. High temperatures (90F and above) cause concrete to set faster. High temperatures also reduce the strength of concrete. Strong winds and low humidity can also cause problems with plastic shrinkage and drying shrinkage cracks, even at moderate temperatures. To avoid these problems, planning, timing of the finishing operations, proper use of retarding admixtures, and proper curing are necessary. More... See similar questions...

Why can't I pour the concrete rather than place it?
S&G Ready Mixed Concrete, Inc FAQ'sNormal concrete is designed with a flowable workability, which means it can be conveyed to the pour site using smooth rounded chutes and still maintain its composition and not segregate. Adding more water to make it pourable usually causes segregation, not to mention the adverse effects of the additional water on the strength of the concrete. To make concrete more flowable or "pourable", without adversely affecting the strength, one would add a Super Plasticizer admixutre. See similar questions...
When is it too cold to place concrete?
FAQsIt depends. Concrete will not set when the concrete temperature is below about 35F. Many times specifications will say something like "Concrete may not be poured when the temperature is 37F and falling." With heated water and aggregates, accelerating admixtures, and other methods, jobs can be poured below freezing, but it is more expensive. In most southern states there are so few freezing days that it is not worth it to try to pour when the temperature is below freezing. See similar questions...
