The TRV controls the radiators temperature by sensing the room air temperature and automatically opening and closing the flow to the radiator to maintain a preset temperature. A manual valve controls the temperature of the radiator regardless of how warm the room already is. On large radiators (above 1800 watts, or where the radiator is oversized for the room) we recommend TRV because they save you having to get up to turn the radiator up and down, but they are not essential.

A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) is shown in the image to the right. You will find it on the pipework at the top or bottom of your radiator. It gives you greater control over the heat from each individual radiator. Each TRV can be set to a temperature to suit you, so you can have different temperatures in different rooms.

New houses may have this, because of new housing regulations. However, existing older systems will not usually have an AUTOMATIC BYPASS (PRESSURE BALANCING) VALVE, or ABV fitted to the system.These are required to cater for the possibility that the majority of radiators are closed off due to low TRV settings, but high room thermostat settings keeping the boiler cycling. Since the circulating pump would still be running, the pressure in the system would increase.

The fitting of a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) to a radiator gives room temperature comfort control and can help to avoid overheating if a radiator is too large for the room. This piece of equipment provides an extra fine tuning control to central heating, by allowing individual room temperatures to be maintained by sensing room temperature and automatically adjusting the flow of hot water into the radiator.

Although the vast majority of our customers enclose it, the thermostatic valves should ideally remain outside of the radiator cover if they are to sense the temperature of the room correctly. If you would like to keep the thermostatic valve outside of the radiator cover, the side of the cover that the valve is on will need to fit between the radiator and the valve. When fitting, a small cut will need to be made in the cover to receive the pipe between the radiator and the valve.

There may be one (or more) radiators in your home, usually the bathroom, which does not have a TRV. This does not mean that one is missing. There sometimes needs to be one radiator always open to allow water to flow into it if all the others are turned off, to avoid damage to the pump or boiler. Sometimes it is not necessary to have a TRV in the room with the main room thermostat.

I have had a few mails on this lately. It is possible for a TRV to stick in the closed position, and most of them have a removable thermostatic head, to reveal the valve plunger beneath it. This should be free to move up and down, but the plunger pin does not move very much, usually not more that about 5 or 6mm. About 2 pounds pressure with a flat object should move the pin down, and it should be free to move up to its highest position by itself with the thermostatic head off.

It's best to set your TRV to a middle setting and see if the room is warm enough. If the room is too warm, turn the TRV down by 1, if the room is too cold, turn the TRV up by 1. A middle setting corresponds to approximately 20ºC (68F). Do NOT turn the TRV fully ON or fully OFF to make the room you are in warmer or cooler - this will waste fuel. Turn it a little way and let it do the work.

A TMV is used to control the temperature of the hot water supply to the manifold. It is necessary when the design temperature is significantly lower than the supply water temperature from the heat source. The TMV installs in the plumbing supply and return lines between the manifold and the heat source. It blends return loop water from the manifold and supply water from the heat source to a manually set temperature.

A No its a manual valve but the 'Traditional' valve found on our valve page, is thermostatic and comes in a range of brass, chrome, and nickel. We are currently manufacturing a further range of traditional style thermostatic valves, and will be adding these to our range in September 07.

A:I am assuming here, that the radiator has already been removed, and that the leak is from the horizontal part of the valve, not the valve stem. The stem, that the shut-off knob pushes on to, tends to have a few drips come out of the top, as the internal washer moves from the top to the bottom of the valve seat. This is usually nothing to worry about, and it is NOT what we are talking about below.

In a direct acting valve, the solenoid core directly opens or closes the orifice, depending upon whether the solenoid is energized or de-energized. The valve will operate from zero psi to the rated maximum pressures. A pilot operated valve has a pilot and bleed orifice and utilizes line pressure for operation. When the solenoid is energized, the core opens the pilot orifice and relieves pressure from the top of the valve piston or diaphragm to the outlet side of the valve.
