What causes rust?

RepairNation.com - Paint & Body FAQ pg 2
Rust if the result of a natural chemical reaction between steel and air. It's accelerated by increased moisture and corrosive agents like road salt and exposure to salty sea water. If covered with paint the metal surface is protected from oxygen and moisture - it won't rust. Rock chips, dents, scrapes or anything that breaks the paint's surface can allow oxidation to continue. What causes rust on my stainless? Is the rust removable?

International Silver - FAQ
Rust is simply the oxidation of iron. 18/8 steel can't unite with oxygen to create iron oxide (rust) without the help of outside elements. The most common cause of rusting on stainless steel is water with a high mineral concentration. If flatware is not completely dried after washing, the remaining water evaporates and the minerals, which were in suspension, settle on the stainless and cause rusting. The rust is easily removed by using a moist sponge and any good cleanser. See similar questions...

My chimney has ugly rust stains running down the side. What causes this?

FAQs
It sounds like you have a prefabricated chimney with a rusted chase cover. The top of the housing that is built around many prefab chimneys has a flat metal roof called a chase top or chase cover. Homebuilders nearly always use galvanized steel chase covers that begin to rust-out after about 15-years. Eventually, the corrosion will eat through the metal and cause a serious leak. We routinely replace these rusted-out covers with stainless steel chase covers that will last a lifetime. See similar questions...

If you prefer the color of raw steel but do not want it to rust, you can spray it with several light coats of clear lacquer or polyurethane. See similar questions...

The way we remove rust from machined iron surfaces at the foundry, is with plenty of solvent (or diesel oil) and a scotch brite pad. Wear rubber gloves so you don't dry out your fingers. When the metal is shiny, wipe on a coating of oil to protect it. For areas that cannot be oiled, because of paper contact, try Johnson's Paste Wax. Rub it on heavy, and don't polish it off. It will self-polish, and protect in the mean time. See similar questions...

Should I worry about rust on my bicycle?

Bicycle FAQ
How concerned you should be about rust depends on what type of bike you have and where you live and how you use your bike. The worst-case scenario would be an all-steel bike, ridden regularly in the rain, stored outdoors in a town next to the ocean. That bike would last about 3 months before turning to rust dust. On the other hand, if that same bike were cleaned, waxed, and lubed after every ride and stored inside, it might last a lifetime. See similar questions...
