Many of those diagnosed with MS are young women with plans of having children at some point in their future. The good news is that MS does not affect fertility, and pregnancies progress "normally" (that is, having the same benefits and risks as someone without MS). For most women with MS, MS symptoms often stabilize or improve during pregnancy.

Stop taking the pill. It is suggested to use the back up method for two-three months to assure an accurate calculation of the delivery date and to prevent a multiple pregnancy. Sometimes it may take one to two months to begin ovulation again, which may cause a delay in becoming pregnant. Most women of child bearing years find that with weight loss their menstrual cycles become more regular, and that it's easier to become pregnant. There are also less complications with pregnancy and delivery. If a patient who has had a LAP-BAND® System procedure becomes pregnant, we simply deflate the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric band and allow them to consume whatever calories they need for mom and baby to grow.

Pregnancy can occur from intercourse that takes place during a period. This is because sperm can live in the body for up to five days, and if a woman ovulates soon after her period, then conception could take place from intercourse that occurred during her period.

We offer two yoga classes per week specifically for prenatal women. In addition, feel free to come to any level 1 class. Some poses should not be done while pregnant, but our teachers have all received training on working with pregnant women. If yours is a high risk pregnancy, please consult your physician before starting yoga.

Most doctors will strongly recommend for you to not get pregnant after your first year of the operation. Most of the excess weight is lost during this time. Your fetus' health may also be endangered.

If you have missed a period, or if your period is late, you can take a pregnancy (urine) test to find out if you are pregnant. We can do a pregnancy test for you and have counsellors available to discuss your options with you. You can also see your doctor to be tested. Stress or changes in your lifestyle can affect your menstrual cycle too, so that may be why your period is late.

If pregnant, the patient is asked to return to the office for repeat blood tests and ultrasounds to insure an ongoing successful pregnancy. After 8-9 weeks she is referred to an obstetrician for the remainder of the pregnancy.

Usually we ask the patient to wait one or two complete menstrual cycles before beginning another ART cycle. Sometimes tests are required that can delay subsequent cycles.
