We spent over 6 months tuning each speaker and almost exclusively used MP3, AAC, and WMA 128 and 192kbps files during this process. The AC adapter is plugged into an AC outlet you know has power (don't laugh, I'm guilty of this one myself). Audio players start to generate distortion, when you have to increase the volume to max or near max just to hear them. This occurs as most audio drivers in portable players aren't properly designed to produce clean audio at high volume levels. The higher the volume level, the greater the distortion. Usually, yes. Using separates allows you to position the drivers independently and more carefully, which will give you greater control over your imaging. For best results, try to keep the mid and tweeter as close together as possible - this will make the two drivers act more like a single point source (which is ideal). For rear fill applications, however, coaxial speakers will perform fine, as imaging is not a primary concern.

The best way to change the sound of your speakers is to change where you put them. Ideally, the speakers should be located at ear level, in front of you, squared off between you. It's then a matter of fiddling with: Other than that, speaker modifications can be a can of worms, or can produce very subtle changes, which you might prefer.
