It is not necessary for students to submit an MCAT score. However, if a student has sat the MCAT examination, submitting the score will assist UNSW staff in assessing the application for a place in UNSW Medicine.

Like the GPA, there is no "good" MCAT score: individuals with low MCAT scores gain admission to medical school, while some candidates with very high scores are not accepted. The most common total numeric score for admitted applicants is 26-28. Applicants with a total numeric score of 27 are as likely to be accepted as rejected.

If you are hoping to matriculate in a professional school the year after you graduate, you should take these exams in the spring of your Junior year. If you plan to do a gap year after you graduate, you should take the MCAT or GRE in the spring two years before you hope to matriculate. For example, if you plan to matriculate in Fall 2010, you will be applying in Fall 2009, which means you should take the MCAT or GRE no later than the Spring of 2009.

All applicants to the RMED Program need to have competitive GPA and MCAT scores. Talk to your premedical advisor at your university.

You don't need any credits to take the MCAT exam, but what you will be expected to know includes material covered in CHEM 11/12, CHEM 151/152, and PHYS 21/22, and BISC 13/14. MATH 31/32 is a co requisite for PHYS 21/22. We recommend that you take these courses, which you need to graduate, before taking the MCAT exam.

Students whose first language is not English may be considered exempt from providing an English Proficiency test score if they have studied academic courses, full time, for at least two years, in an English speaking University that is in a country whose official first language is English. If in doubt, please contact the Graduate Education Office for clarification. Only those applying for admission to the MPhil/PhD programmes in the School of Business are required to send the official score report of GRE or GMAT, taken within five years. Initially, we advise an international applicant to attach photocopies of his/her score reports with the application, but official reports issued by ETS will be required before full processing of that application will take place. In some instances, the Graduate School will accept certified copies of these reports.

GPA's and MCAT scores do not offset one another. Both have predictive value for success in medical school, particularly in the first two years, which everyone seems to think are the hardest. Therefore, the Admissions Committee generally prefers students who have both good GPA's and good MCAT scores.
