In the case of Magellan units with their own hard disk, data is exchanged between PC and GPS via the functions Import/Export. The Magellan driver software must be installed on the PC and the data transmission mode must be set on the GPS unit. When data is being uploaded/downloaded, the Garmin units must be set to GARMIN. In Online Mode, the GPS unit must be set to NMEA. The NMEA setting is also necessary for the Geogrid GPS function “GPS Track from receiver”.

Waypoints may have eight characters in the name. (Explorist can have twenty.) The first 200 waypoints may have an additional 30 characters stored in 'comments'. (Explorist can have more.) Once those 200 slots have been filled, additional comments are siliently ignored. These limits apply even to the Meridians and Explorist where you can bank switch waypoints via the card utilities. Up to 20 routes may be loaded, each with a max of 30 points. In version 5.

A Waypoint is a place or position with a defined coordinate and a name. For example, Your House, the Church, the road Junction, the Marina. A waypoint may have other attributes such as a Symbol (Icon), Height and Comment. Sometimes waypoints are refered to as Points of Interest (POIs). Marina ===> Church ===> Junction ===> House. You might construct a route so that you can load it to your GPS in order to guide you when visiting each waypoint in order.

In the new navigation software, data transfer from Computer to GPS Unit also operates via via USB for Garmin receivers. Although Suunto units can also be connected via USB, a COM interface is emulated here by the Suunto driver software. Installation of the Suunto driver is therefore a prerequisite for data transfer taking place.

In Options-Preferences-Map Display, turn ON "Show All Tracks". Then in the Tracks or Routes Database list, a checkbox will appear beside each database name. You can select which individual databases to Draw on the screen. In Tracks list, I have all tracks unchecked, so I expect not any track to be displayed, however, the track that was visible last is still roaming my map :-) The track you are recording to is displayed regardless of the this checkbox.

The MapAdvisor menu option "File->Save track to GPX file on card" will create a file in directory /mapadvisor on storage card. This file includes the current track information and all waypoints you see on the screen. You can open a file later in other programs and view the track there. For example, it can be opened with the PC program QuakeMap.

The original software as shipped with the Magellan 315/320 does not provide the trackpoint creation date and time in track download. GPSU defaults to the time at which the trackpoints were downloaded. Software version 3.12 (or later) obtainable from the Magellan website should fix this problem. You need to upgrade your 315/320 to the latest software version.

A "waypoint" is simply the coordinates of a specific location or landmarks. These may be points you may want to later return to, such as camp, your truck, fork in a trail or a favorite fishing spot. Waypoints may be entered directly by taking a reading with the unit at the location itself, giving it a name, and then saving the point.

A handful of new US routes have been created recently. Some of these are out of the original numbering system and appear to use a new numbering system based on a multiple of 12.5 (in other words 437 may be next). US 412 is a NHS/ISTEA High Priority Corridor, and was designated in 1982 (see http://www.aaroads.com/high-priority/corr08.html ). It might become a future Interstate.

Routes are based on best available due to traffic, road conditions or accidents. PCH is the most common route taken.

The remaining voice tracks, "Please Be Quiet" (female voice) and "Shut It" (male voice) are intended as comic reminders to your co-workers to pipe down. While these can be humorous, they may be taken the wrong way in certain workplaces, so use them sparingly if at all.

The current AASHTO policy on U.S. highways says routes with directional suffixes and single state US routes should be renumbered or decommissioned. However, the locals and traveling public are used to the existing signage, and would be confused if such renumberings took place. Prior to the US-numbered routes, many states had already established state route systems. With the advent of US routes, most following existing state routes, most states removed the original state route numbers at some time, but AL, FL, GA, and TN kept them in their records for maintenance purposes. Most are unposted outside GA, although a few errors get out. GA, however, posts them consistently. AL, FL, and GA also give maintenance numbers to the Interstates (GA's are in the 400s).

The Magellan Owners Association has entered into a 100 year Master Lease with Residential Cruise Line, Ltd. for the residential areas of the ship. Full owners will have unlimited access to their residence. Monthly Fractional owners will have unlimited access to their residence during the fixed or variable month(s) that they own via a 50 year leasehold from the Magellan Owners Association.

In 1519, five ships led by Ferdinand de Magellan set out to circumnavigate the world and explore the “spice islands.” Three years later, only the ship Victoria returned to Spain, with 18 people and several barrels of cloves. Sadly, Magellan, who died in battle during the voyage, never saw the results of his spice discoveries. Those spices inspired the creation of Gin as we now know it, and it is to cloves in particular, that Magellan Gin owes its unrivaled taste.

Summer routes are not marked. In the winter, suggested routes are only intermittently marked with blue diamonds, except within Wilderness Areas where they are intermittently marked with tree blazes. From one trail marker, the next marker is usually not visible, so route finding may be the most important skill you'll need for a successful trip. Many alternate routes also access the huts - these are usually unmarked and are not designated on 10th Mountain brochures or official maps.

Winter routes to the huts often contain sections of cross-country travel, whereas summer routes follow established roads and trails. Winter snowpack makes off-road, off-trail travel more feasible. Obstacles such as water and dense vegetation can make winter routes impassible during the summer. Summer routes are not marked, however, they are indicated on summer maps produced by 10th Mountain.
