In Waterloo Region, 30 cases of pneumococcal meningitis have been reported since 1990 (with 1 to 6 cases reported every year). Meningitis caused by this organism occurs as an isolated event or complication of illness in an individual.

Meniere’s disease is classified as an inner ear disorder that causes repeated attacks of dizziness and the discomfort of fullness from the affected ear. This is due to increase pressure of the inner ear fluids. Fluids in the inner ear chambers are constantly being produced and absorbed by the circulatory system. If there are any disturbances in the delicate relationship, there is an over production or under absorption of the fluids.

Meniere’s disease is a disorder that produces a group of symptoms: sudden attacks of whirling dizziness, tinnitus or head noise, a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear, and a fluctuating hearing loss. While the underlying cause is not known, it is believed to result from a fluctuation in the pressure of fluid that fills the inner ear. An attack may last from a few hours to several days.

Medical Options: Treatment may vary, depending on the patient. This depends on several factors according to the cause, magnitude, and frequency of the symptoms. In order to improve the inner ear circulation and control the fluid pressure, treatment may consist of medication to stimulate the inner ear circulation. Drugs which accomplish this are vasodilating drugs (blood pressure pills) and diuretics (water pills) with anti-dizziness medication.

To reduce congestion, the physician may prescribe nasal sprays, nose drops, or oral decongestants. Antibiotics will be prescribed for any bacterial infection found in the sinuses (antibiotics are not effective against a viral infection). Antihistamines may be recommended for the treatment of allergies. If this initial course does not provide relief than the physician may do further testing and prescribe other medicines and combinations of the above and other medicines.

Many oral antibiotics are available to treat Lyme disease. Specific regimens are prescribed depending on the symptoms, and 75 to 80 percent of persons treated will recover from the disease. Unfortunately, before treatment some patients will develop a severe case of the disease, with tissue damage and disability. To avoid being bitten by the deer tick you should use outdoor insecticides and keep deer away from areas where children play (use an eight-foot-high or electrified fence).

There is no prescriptive drug celiacs can take to effect a cure. In fact, there is no cure, though there is every opportunity for celiacs to lead normal, healthy lives by following a diet that contains no gluten. This means avoiding all products derived from wheat, rye, barley, oats, and a few other lesser-known grains.

I-692 states that "Nothing in this chapter requires any physician to authorize the use of medical marijuana for a patient." In many cases, doctors will not recommend medical marijuana. They often fear the federal government, which has in the past threatened doctors who recommend medical marijuana. However, a federal appeals court ruled in October of 2002 that the government cannot penalize doctors who recommend medical marijuana to their patients. See Conant v. Walters.

Because thyroid problems can occur many years after the radiation therapy was given, life-long monitoring is recommended. If a patient develops hypothyroidism after radiation treatment they will need life-long treatment with thyroid hormone.

Although the practice of Qigong has helped some people with some of the symptoms of this disease, we know of no random clinical trials definitely proving that there is any correlation between the alleviation of symptoms and practicing Qigong. However, stress has a way of exacerbating problems, and working for a living doesn’t help either (but it’s unavoidable). So reduction of stress can probably help any condition.

Medtronic Inc. has been providing products and therapies that alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life for over 50 years. Activa DBS was developed by Medtronic in the 1980s and was approved for use in the United States in 2002. It has been proven to reduce some of the symptoms associated with PD. It is currently included in the American Academy of Neurology Guideline Summary for Patients as a surgical treatment option for PD.

Antibiotics, such as penicillin G or cefriaxone, can be used to treat people with meningococcal disease.

On most occasions, our patients do have a primary care physician, but they cannot effectively treat the complexity of symptoms that these patients present. Our Physicians are trained and specialize in treating these conditions; however, we do encourage complimentary therapies such as chiropractic services, massage therapy, etc. if these treatments provide symptom relief for our patients.

The appearance may range from a thickened, velvety brown streaking to a leathery lesion, most often on the neck or in skin folds under the arm or breasts, around the belt line or in the groin, but it may develop elsewhere. Since stress is high on the list of headache causes and migraine triggers, stress management techniques are high on the list of headache prevention strategies. These include massage, meditation, biofeedback, and having a positive attitude.

Whenever possible, cancer patients should be able to receive cancer care close to their home. Depending on the circumstances, most patients can be managed successfully at the community level. In many instances, patients receive part of their care at UMCCC and other therapy from their private physicians in medical facilities close to where they live. The University of Michigan has joined forces with a group of community hospitals and physician practices to enhance patient care.
