There are a few tips regarding this subject on the forums. PS/2 apparently is not recognized by OS X if there is a USB mouse attached. The easiest solution is to use USB keyboard and mouse, or some mice include an adapter to allow them to operate off the PS/2 mouse port. Basically, you need to be all one way or the other for the OS to function correctly. Alternatively, people have found that sometimes going into BIOS and disabling the USB (legacy) keyboard and mouse settings work.

There is not USB keyboard module in the current kernel, but it is possible to install user-built HID kernel modules and an event redirector to enable the use of the USB keyboard with applications like rxvt. Since you're obviously interested in effective design (i.e. removing the caps lock key, etc.) why not use the Dvorak keyboard? Dvorak keyboard layouts come standard with Linux. I'm using one to type this. However, Dvorak is only suited to English and a few other Latin-alphabet languages. In the Event/Matrix/Score editor double click (not single click; this is important) the MIDI-In status button. Now when you select a specific note, you can affect the velocity and pitch by triggering your controller. So this does what you want basically, but it alters both pitch and velocity together. reViSiT, since v0.87.4, now only has two modes: a default mode and an option to use Manual override. Most hosts should work without changing any settings, but some hosts use keyboard hooks to get the keyboard input and this steals it from reViSiT. So Manual mode steals it back!
