A straight pipe takes the place of the catalytic converter portion of the exhaust system. A catalytic converter is usually a restictive part of the exhaust, but it's purpose is to reduce some of the harmful emissions expelled by the engine. Straight pipes are NOT street legal and are only generally used for track purposes. A side effect is that they can also make your exhaust much louder as well as emitting a slightly foul ouder from your emissions.
