The tagSNP selection is based on the extent of LD between the pairs of SNPs. This level of LD is measured in terms of an r-squared value and hence, varying values for r-squared will yield varying numbers of SNPs in the QuickSNP output. When r-squared=1 for two SNPs, they are said to be in perfect LD (and these two markers are redundant for genotyping), whereas an r-squared=0 indicates no LD. An r-squared of 0.

The gene-based approach offers a lower cost alternative to choosing anonymous SNPs across a region that has been chosen for fine-mapping. It provides a reasonable way to focus limited resources on the stretches of DNA most likely to contain disease susceptibility variants, the genes and flanking regions. tagSNPs are selected in and near genes, while intergenic regions are skipped over.

Disease causing variation need not necessarily lie in the coding region of a gene. Potential regulatory regions in the 5’ or 3’ flanking regions of the gene, including the promoter, could harbor relevant variants.

Collagen is a type of protein. Protein is abundant in the human body, as it is with all living creatures. Failure to meet Camber requirements leads to the intensity of modulation sidebands, particularly harmful at higher fields, where optimum sensitivity and resolution are required. When Camber becomes excessive, sample tubes can make contact with the inner surfaces of the probe causing time consuming and expensive repairs to the probe.

Failure to adhere to diameter tolerances can produce a diversity of undesirable performance characteristics in NMR spectroscopy. If the I.D. is too large, coaxial inserts can move during spectral accumulation. If the I.D. is too small, any insert can burst the tube making sample loss a catastrophic possibility. The R. is from my unused first name, Rita, and I use it to distinguish me from another craft artist with a very similar name - and also to avoid confusion on official forms.

First, I have owned both and both are good products. Colgate originally owned the rights to the Via-jet (R). The Via-jet (R) comes with a lid to keep dust out of the reservoir while not in use, and also comes with both the standard and sulcus tips (2 each). Finally, the Water Pik (R) model has changed and our cannulae adapters no longer fit the newer model so we no longer sell it. The ViaJet has recently been revised and is available now as the Viajet PRO (Sept. 2002).

The name is partly based on the (first) names of the first two R authors (Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka), and partly a play on the name of the Bell Labs language 'S' (see What is S?).
