Any messages larger than the MTU are divided into smaller packets before being sent. Ethernet limits transfers of up to 1514 (include Ethernet header) octets of data. Normally, you should leave this value as the default value. Change it only if the ISP is providing a MTU that is not optimal.

The minus 28 is for the header information (IP and ICMP). If this packet size gives fragmentation errors, decrease the value until the packet is echoed without fragmentation. An MTU of 1500 (ping 1472) is the windows default value. On unsecured networks, allowing PMTU discovery carries the risk that an attacker might force the MTU to a very small value and overwork the local system's TCP/IP stack. MTU's are specially critical when users are using iBurst connectivity on a networked environment with routers and firewalls. Since iBurst is based on PPP, default Windows MTU settings of 1500 cannot be used, and should be adjusted, even if problems are not experienced, to optimise iBurst connectivity.
