On an average, 26% of American households experience some form of violence. Some if these "common" forms are considered: slapping, scratching, shoving, punching.

Any violence which occurs in the family is considered family violence. Spouse abuse is a form of family violence which occurs between people who are married or living together or having a relationship.

The department takes all forms of assault seriously. If an inmate has been assaulted or feels they are in danger, they should immediately contact a correctional officer or sergeant. They will take steps to report and investigate the inmate’s concerns and move the inmate to a safe place at the institution. The Victims of Family Violence policy is a mandated government policy that grants special priority status to social housing applicants whose personal or family’s safety is at risk because of abuse by a partner/spouse or family member living in the home. The intent of this policy is to address situations of abuse within a family household and enable the applicant to separate permanently from the abuser.

Family violence orders have different names in different states: apprehended domestic violence orders (NSW), intervention orders ( Victoria ), protection orders ( Queensland and ACT), restraining orders ( South Australia , Western Australia and Northern Territory ) and restraint orders ( Tasmania ).

Discussions on the evening news and in magazines offer suggestions to what can be done, but nothing seems to work. Fingers have been pointed at various institutions that have failed -- our school system, the family, government, social programs -- but little, outside of throwing more money into the system, has been proposed.

The judge sets the mandatory bail amount for any Domestic Violence Crime. At arraignment the court may reduce this amount.
