Vomiting is the expulsion of food, fluid or debris from the stomach or small intestine due to coordinated movements of the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. It is important to differentiate this from regurgitation, which is a passive process rather than a coordinated effort like vomiting.

Vomiting is forceful emptying of the stomach. 90% of the time, this symptom is caused by a benign, limited viral infection. However, it can be the first symptom of far more serious problem such as appendicitis or infection, urinary or more serious. It is seen with poison ingestion and sometimes with concussion.

If you become ill during a cruise, visit the ship's medical center and follow the instructions of the medical staff aboard the ship. Be considerate of others, and wash your hands more frequently.

Treat it the same way as you would diarrhea, only go slowly at first with clear fluids. (Ice popsicles, Jell-O, ginger ale, 7-Up, etc.)

This includes mustard, salt water or sticking your finger or other objects in the child's throat. These methods are considered dangerous. ALWAYS call the Poison Center or your physician prior to making your child vomit.

If you experience morning sickness don't brush immediately afterwards, to 'freshen up', as this can damage your teeth. Vomit contains stomach or gastric acid, which erodes the enamel, thereby weakening the teeth. Rather rinse your mouth with water, or ideally with an alcohol-free mouthwash.
