With the variety of different email programs that are available, we cannot provide all the details for each and every one of them. All of them should have the same basic required settings for accessing your email. These are: For SMTP access to send email using your SMTP server, set your Outgoing Mail Server to: mail.yourdomain.

You will need to make some minor changes to the server settings in your email program. Instructions are available on the configuration support page.

Your email address is your login ID followed by @speed.net. For example, if your login ID was "bob", your email address would be bob@speed.net. On older versions of Eudora, your POP account is your login ID followed by the POP server (examples: bob@mail.speed.net, bob@dialup-pop.speed.net). It looks like an email address, but it isn't. We recommend turning on secure connections for both sending and receiving.

Here are notes on setting up MS Outlook for email access under MS Windows 95 or 98. We will use, in this outline, an example user named John Smith with a mail account name of smith@rxn.com and a dialup PPP account name of Psmith. You will need to substitute your own account names. MS Outlook is a commercial email client from MicroSoft. In MS IE, select [View], then [Internet Options...], then select the [Programs] tab. Next to the Mail label, select MS Outlook. Save your changes.

If you have at least MacOS 8.6, you should be able to download a recent version of Eudora directly from their web site. In other words, each site has its own unique area where boxes registered under it are maintained, rather than having all our POP3 accounts clumped in one common area. In order for you to access your e-mail you must enter the following in the corresponding fields: If you have problems place a " %" instead of an "@" symbol in the username box. By entering the "@yourdomain.

You have to configure your email client program before you can use it to retrieve your email on the host. SMTP (outgoing) server: mail.hku.hk (for HKU network users only), otherwise enter your ISP's server name. IMAP (incoming) server : hkusua.hku.hk / hkusuc.hku.hk / hkucc.hku.hk / graduate.hku.hk (HKUVPN connection required) For the "Mail Server Type", select POP3 if you wish to download your incoming mail to your PC, or select IMAP if you wish to access emails on the email server.

Outlook Express users, please note: Go to the "Tools" menu, and choose "Accounts..." Then choose "Add"; then "Mail..." Then enter the information you're asked for, including the information above.

Pick your mailserver software for information on how to properly configure it. If your software isn't included in this list, a comprehensive list is available at http://ordb.org/faq/#usage. Substitute or add "bl.spamcop.net" where applicable. The response code from the SpamCop server to indicate a queried IP is listed is 127.0.0.

Security/privacy considerations. Reading mail implies two stages: authentication to a server and the transport/display of the message contents. Both stages can be performed on encrypted channels or in clear. Clear channels give everybody on the local network access to user's login name, password, and/or e-mail messages. Transport protocols: POP and IMAP perform transport on clear channels. IMAPS transports the messages via an SSL encrypted channel on port 993.

VPN allows you to use the same email configuration away that you use on campus. See Install and Configure Eudora.

If you choose not to use VPN from off-campus and still want to send email through your own broadband provider, you will need to configure your mail client settings as described in the document Configuring Eudora Email When Off-campus. Suggested settings for Verizon and Comcast Cable broadband customers are included in that document.
