All known oil tanks and systems are compatible with Bioheat® fuel at blends of 20% or less. For higher biodiesel blends, up to and including 100% biodiesel, compatibility will depend on the materials (metals, plastics, and rubber parts) in your tanks, pumps and fuel lines. For blends higher than 20% biodiesel only steel, mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, fluorinated polyethylene fluorinated polypropylene and fiberglass vessels are recommended.

Keeping your oil tank nearly full during the summer reduces the amount of condensation that will occur in your tank. Condensation occurs naturally when it is cooler inside the tank compared to the outside temperature. This trapped moisture can lead to bacteria growth and the development of sediment at the bottom of your tank. Our Tank Guard service is also recommended for prolonging the life of your tank.

Take a yard stick, or a long, thin stick, insert it in the tank, then measure the inches of oil left on the stick. The amount of oil depends on the size of the tank and the number of inches in it. There are sticks available from us to make this easier. Not all tanks can be stuck, however, if the tank is under the residence, call us to fill it. Some tanks also have gauges on them.

Owners must register their oil tank, at no charge, with the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. Depending on the age of the tank you will be required to remove it or upgrade it by a certain date.

For the purposes of DEQ's program, a heating oil tank is an underground tank used for storing heating fuel for use on site. The heating oil tank is part of a heating oil system that should be maintained and, if necessary, replaced just as roofs, appliances, furnaces and water heaters that require on-going maintenance and are replaced when they are no longer useful. The useful life of an unprotected steel tank is about 20 years.

Underground heating oil tanks are a potential source of contamination of the soil and groundwater, may pose a fire and explosion hazard under certain conditions, and heating oil from leaking underground tanks may impact human health. Underground tanks also corrode and over time may weaken to the point where they can no longer hold fuel.

Oil tank removal and installation is subject to state safety codes. For example, in Massachusetts the local Fire Chief is the oversight authority, and permits are required for both the removal of the old tank and the installation of the new tank. The proper permits must be obtained and the work must be performed by a Licensed Technician. Please refer to the Replacement Checklist page for details to consider when replacing a leaking oil tank.

Water from condensation is the chief cause of internal tank corrosion. Water is heavier than fuel oil, so it settles to the tank bottom. It is generally impractical to try to remove the moisture. The best solution is to treat the tank annually with a liquid corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion inhibitor chemical reacts only with the moisture on the tank bottom and reduces the corrosive activity. Please refer to the Lincoln Laboratory website for corrosion inhibitor information.

The law states that only OFTEC registered companies employing trained technicians are permitted to install or replace domestic and commercial oil tanks. You should also consider that if you were to undertake such a project yourself, or employ a non-registered individual for the purpose, then the tank manufacturers guarantee becomes invalid.

When you leave an oil tank only partly full over the summer, you're also leaving a pocket of air inside where water can condense. Moisture is all it takes for bacteria to build up and grow. After the bacteria dies, it falls to the bottom of your tank and helps create sludge - a leading cause of system breakdowns. The condensed water can also corrode your tank and, if it gets into your heating system, it becomes another cause of breakdowns.

We use a system called “degree-day forecasting.” This industry standard uses a formula based on the previous 24-hour average temperature. We compute the number of “degree days” that have elapsed since your last delivery and schedule automatic deliveries based on your usage patterns for heat and/or hot water. A private weather forecasting service provides daily updates to help us stay on top of current and impending weather conditions.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, a home with an exterior tank older than 15 years or an interior tank older than 25 years will not be insured.

Above-ground heating oil tanks are not regulated by the DEQ, so decommissioning and certification are not necessary.

The heating oil tank generic remedy is one of several approaches for addressing heating oil contamination. The generic remedy involves property where some low-level contamination can remain at the site. This may involve some soil removal to achieve the requirements. This method cannot be used for sites with groundwater present in the area of the tank. Refer to the DEQ's Heating Oil Tank Generic Remedy Document for more information.

If your tank has rust along its bottom or is showing any signs of “weepage” (which may appear as an oily stain on the tank) call us immediately to schedule an estimate for tank replacement. Do not remove rust from the bottom of your oil tank as that could result in a major breach!
