Under normal home phototherapy usage, the bulbs have a useful life of at least three to five years, and as many as ten years. Fluorescent bulbs gradually lose power over time so that over many years, treatment times are perhaps double that of new bulbs, but the type of light remains consistent (has nearly the same relative spectroradiometric profile). The decision to replace bulbs is therefore only a matter of the patient's tolerance of longer treatment times.

Several safety measures protect service technicians and homeowners from eye or skin UV exposure, including a lamp shutoff switch, and a sight glass for safe and easy lamp inspection. That type of radiation is much less carcinogenic than the shorter-wavelength UV-B radiation, but one needs more UV-A than UV-B for acquiring a tan.

The bulbs or lamps that Avalon uses to illuminate the VU meter are 14V 80MA mini bayonet bulb. You can find this bulb at many electronic part stores (Radio Shack Part Number 272-1117.) The approximate cost for these bulbs are US$1.50 for two. The fuse that Avalon uses on all units except the U5 is a standard 1 amp 250V slow blow fuse 1 1/4" x 1/4" 3AG or MDL Type (Radio Shack Part Number: 270-1021). The U5 uses a 1 amp 250V slow blow fuse 5mm x 22mm (Radio Shack Part Number: 27-1063).

Ultraviolet light technology is a non-chemical approach to disinfection. This process is simple and inexpensive, requiring very low maintenance. Ultraviolet light represents a portion of the sun's electromagnetic spectrum. It is the wavelength band immediately beyond the violet end of visible light. All bands of UV light are present throughout the environment - it comes from the sun, light fixtures, electrical devices, etc. The UV range of the spectrum is characterized by wavelengths between 100 and 400 nanometers (nm).

The UV lamp should be replaced once every year but also there is an indicator or sight-glass located approximately six inches from the American-Lights? chassis, that will glow while the UV lamp is working.

Tiffany style lamps normally have unique bases and sockets. For the most common types of Tiffany lamps, i.e, those with 16" diameter lamp shades up to 20" diameter lamp shades, two (2) 60 watt sockets are generally recommended, although in some cases three (3) sockets and/or higher voltage bulbs are used as well. For Tiffany lamps with larger size lamp shades, three (3) sockets are generally recommended.

If you want to find tugtupite, especially the hard-to-spot-in-daylight tugtupite, these LW LED sources -- even the good ones that work really well -- can be your worst enemy. Here's why: tugtupite has a set of emission lines in the yellow-orange that's best stimulated by UV in the 350-400 nm range; i.e. the excitation peak for the orange response lies squarely in the LW.

Many UV lamps intentionally produce ozone in large amounts (UV-V), which we do not recommend, nor does the EPA or American Lung Association. The UV lamps we use (UV-C) have special tubing that filters out the 185nm ozone wavelength, however all UV lamps that are considered 'ozone free' do produce some ozone, but the amount of ozone produced is so minute it is not considered an ozone producing lamp.
