Generally all DDR is backward compatible and can run at any bus speed slower than it is rated to run. For example if your PC has a 266MHz FSB (Front Side Bus), you will need PC2100 266MHz DDR. If your PC has a 266MHz FSB, you can use PC2100 266MHz or PC2700 333MHz DDR. All PC’s that accept PC2100 DDR will also accept PC2700 DDR; however your memory will only run as fast as the slowest link in your system.

DDR memory has been manufactured to be backward compatible so you can add faster memory modules to your machine. For example, if you install a PC3200 module alongside an original PC2700 module the memory will wor and be fully compatible but you will not gain any performance benefit, as the PC3200 module will be clocking down to PC2700 to run alongside the original PC2700 module installed.

Although these are all types of double data rate (DDR) memory, the varying numbers refer to the different speeds of memory your computer was designed for. Crucial no longer carries PC2100 (DDR266) memory, but PC2700 (DDR333) memory and PC3200 (DDR400) are backward-compatible with PC2100. Memory is designed to be backward-compatible, so generally speaking, you can safely add faster memory to a computer that was designed to run slower memory.

It is proven by many real application cases that the short propagation delay is the key parameter for a high-speed DDR register. Less Cache on the motherboard will result in a larger speed increase when adding EDO DRAM. EDO eliminates a wait state between the execution of sequential-read commands from memory, giving the CPU significantly faster access to memory.
