After a while, smoke machines can get clogged up with ash and carbon - a by-product of heating smoke fluid. Smoke fluid can be quite a viscous liquid, so it's almost unavoidable that the machine gets clogged over time. To avoid it happening, follow the instructions you get with your smoke machine with regards to cleaning it. Some suggest a litre of distilled water for every 5 litres of fluid that the machine uses, others suggest water and white vinegar after 40 hours of continuous operation.

You should use only Tempest “Rosco” smoke fluid in Tempest “Rosco” Smoke Machines. The earlier Tempest smoke machines (1601, 1801, 9000) were manufactured by Martin and use a Martin specified formula. Manufacturers use very pure pharmaceutical grade ingredients which have an impurity factor of one per billion or similar (very pure) plus the cost of transportation of bulky heavy fluid containers. You should follow the CPAP manufacturer’s specifications to clean your CPAP machine. Disposable filters may be replaced every month. Generally, you should clean your mask daily, we recommend you soak the mask in non-lanolin antibacterial soapy water for 10-minutes, rinse and air dry. DO NOT USE ANY ALCOHOL cleaners on the mask! Any clean rag is quite well for cleaning small amounts of toner out of your printer, plain-paper fax or photocopier. If the amount of toner and paper dust is a little more abundant, use a can of compressed air to try to blow any visible piles of dust and debris out of the machine. If you picked up the machine, you need to drain the remaining product, flush the machine with warm water (draining it out of the spout) and wipe it down before you return it. Your printer should be cleaned every 1000 cards or at every ribbon change (whichever is sooner) when printing onto normal cards. The printer will prompt you to do so at every 1000 cards by either a flashing LED (P205, P210 & P310) or by an LCD message (P320, P420, P520 & P720).
