Preparation for a CT scan depends on the type of examination requested by your physician. You will be provided with detailed instructions at the time of appointment scheduling.

It is preferable that you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing (especially shirt or blouse). You may be asked to remove any clothing or jewelry that might degrade the CT images, such as, belt buckles, earrings, bras, glasses, dentures, and hairpins. If your examination is of the abdomen or pelvis, you will be asked to arrive 1 hour prior to your examination to drink oral contrast to better evaluate the bowel. For the following examinations, do not eat 4 hours before test.

Review the paperwork your Doctor has given you. If your Doctor has ordered an exam with Contrast, you will be asked to stop eating 4 to 6 hours prior to your exam. You may have small sips of water if you need to take medications prior to your exam. When you make your appointment with us, the front office will advise you of any additional instructions

You will be in contact with a technologist. Even when he or she is not in the CT room you will be able to communicate via intercom. The technologist will inform you when an exam is about to start, and when it is finished. Family members and/or friends are not permitted to stay with you in the CT room.

Answer: Allow yourself at least a few months to prepare for the exam. Keep up with your reading and look for articles related to the exam knowledge areas. To help you study, ACHE publishes a number of texts that address the knowledge areas on the exam. As with all disasters, being able to keep you and your family warm, fed, hydrated, and supplied with vital medications is critical. If islanders are prepared individually, the islands will survive collectively. During a pandemic, power, water, and other essential services will likely continue without interruption, but access to food, fuel, and routine healthcare may be limited.

Not everyone needs an injection for CT imaging. When an contrast injection is needed, a pharmaceutical contrast agent made of iodine is used. This is only done when the radiologist and/or the referring physician have determined that it is necessary for diagnostic purposes. Iodine contrast is used to make specific organs, blood vessels or tissue types "stand out" with more image contrast in the resulting picture.

Yes. The contrast takes 24 to 48 hours to completely filter out of your body. We advise patients to drink lots of water to help this process. If you are a Diabetic taking Glucophage or Metformin, you may take your medication before your exam as usual. However, you must stop taking your medication for 48 hours after your CT scan.

You may schedule a CT Lung Cancer Screening exam without a referral (prescription). Because this is a new screening procedure, please be aware that this exam is not covered by Medicare or insurance at this time. The results of your exam will be sent to your physician.

If you are diabetic, and on glucophage and/or glucovance, please contact our office as soon as possible. This exam requires a bowel cleansing. The day before the exam, eat a light lunch and dinner, without any roughage. At your pharmacy, buy Ducolax tablets or a ten ounce bottle of magnesium citrate. Sometime between 6:00 and 8:00pm the evening before the exam take either four (4) Dulcolax tablets or the bottle of magnesium citrate. On the day of the exam, do not eat solid food.

No specific preparation is required. Please do not use powders, talc, lotion or deodorant on the breast and in the underarm area. For your comfort and convenience, two piece outfits are recommended. If you have had mammograms in the past at any other facility, you will be asked to bring the films with you to your scheduled exam.
