Homeschooled students in the U.S. and Canada score 15 to 30 percentile points, on average, above their public school peers. This is true not only in the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics, but also in science, social studies, and study skills. Testing shows that they are also receiving a firm foundation in sound values, in the history of their own nation and the world, and in self-directed learning.

Children are always welcome at all Keddem services and other community events. We do, however, have several programs created specifically for children (and their parents.) Children's Services are held concurrently with our regular third Saturday of the month Shacharit service and are at Kehillah Jewish High School.

There are two reasons. The first is that the cost of school is high in relation to the poorest families' income. Costs consist of school fees (although often modest in rural areas), contributions to school maintenance funds, insurance, books, pens, uniform and travel to school. Many of these costs have to be paid in advance at the start of the school year in September. And as children advance up through school the costs increase.

The Klingenstein programs have been designed to meet the challenges specific to independent schools. This fact distinguishes the Klingenstein center from other graduate programs throughout the country, which tend to focus on public schools. While all educators share some common goals, the public and independent environments are also quite different, requiring different skills and knowledge in order to succeed.

Several states have found that a coordinator is very helpful in getting the program up and running. North Carolina, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Washington have farm-to-school coordinators who facilitate their programs, as do some school districts, such as Santa Fe, New Mexico. Yes. Breakfast for Learning and other community based organizations have some food programs across Canada. But there is not enough funding or federal leadership in the form of fi nancial assistance or national standards so most children don't have access to these services.

Our large campus has been built for children and their families. Both classrooms and playground areas have been thoughtfully designed for kids of all ages. There are big play toys for climbing and sliding and covered sandboxes that give children many choices on where to play and explore. The inside of our classrooms have a very open feel, with appropriately sized furniture for the different age groups.

Music Together does not organize class content around themes and ages as other programs do. These themes are more apt to reflect an adult's concept of music education than a child’s way of experiential learning. Arts education should be taught by licensed, "highly qualified" arts education teachers as required by NCLB. The arts do not exist in a vacuum and need to be connected to life and learning as much as possible. Integration is a way of showing how the arts are fundamentally connected to other branches of knowledge and how those branches are connected to the arts.
