We test the moisture content using a hydrometer. Once the fluid has an excess of 3% moisture, we will recommend replacing it. This is checked annually by us and normally requires changing every 2 years.

Brake fluid is a hydroscopic fluid, meaning that it attracts moisture. Moisture is created from the heating/cooling effects of normal brake use, also humidity from the atmosphere. Every 30,000 miles or as indicated by a “litmus” test. Brake fluid gets extremely hot and it does “break down.” When this happens, the brake fluid will start to negatively effect the seals in the brake system. Check the manual. Most older VWs use DOT 3. The newer ones use DOT 4 or Super DOT 4 (higher boiling point). Castrol makes one which is both DOT 3 and 4 compatible with a very high boiling point. The only place I have found Super DOT 4 in the US is at the VW dealer. One of the dealerships here also recommends Wagner as an aftermarket DOT 4 oil. Squeeze old pads against caliper with plyers to push pistons back into caliper (to make room for new, thick pads). Depending on the vehicle make and model, some transmissions have external filters exactly the same as an engine and some have a filter inside the gearbox which requires the pan to be removed and then replaced. The fluid should be filtered after the first 200 hours of use and should be changed out every 2,000 hours. This can take place at the distributor location and be completed in about 30 minutes. Tes does not "use up" the tes fluid while in operation. It is possible however, to lose approximately one teaspoon of fluid when the quick connects are disconnected.
