When is it necessary to change the brake fluid?
Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked QuestionsWe test the moisture content using a hydrometer. Once the fluid has an excess of 3% moisture, we will recommend replacing it. This is checked annually by us and normally requires changing every 2 years.
Why change the brake fluid?
Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked QuestionsBrake fluid is a hydroscopic fluid, meaning that it attracts moisture. Moisture is created from the heating/cooling effects of normal brake use, also humidity from the atmosphere. This moisture causes rusting and pitting of internal parts, which leads to unnecessary replacement costs. Under severe braking excess, moisture can cause the fluid to boil, leading to brake failure. How often do I change the fluid?
Frequently Asked Questions :: ChemFree's SmartWasher :: Worl...Under normal use, and proper maintenance, you should never have to change the solution. That is one of the biggest advantages of the SmartWasher. Ozzy cleans the solution of contaminants, leaving you clean solution to work with. Hydrocarbon materials are bioremediated in the SmartWasher so your "used" solution does not need to be hauled away as hazardous waste. See similar questions...
Should I have a brake fluid flush done?
Auto Mechanics", "Auto Repairs","Mechanic Talk", "Certified ...New brake fluid is both clean and clear, dirty brake fluid is obvious. That dirt and contamination can wear on all of your hydraulic brake parts, particularly your seals, causing them to fail prematurely. But more important than the dirt in your brake fluid is what you can't see, the water. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture. If you were to leave a can of brake fluid open overnight, it will be ruined by the moisture it soaks up from the air. This is intentional. See similar questions...
How often should I replace my brake fluid?
consumer-questionsabsorb water; this water can corrode internal parts of the brake system and also lower the boiling point of the fluid. DOT-3 type are older fluids; DOT-4 and DOT-5 are newer specifications. The principal differences are in wet and dry boiling points; the dry boiling point is important in fresh brake fluid, but the wet boiling point is important in older brake fluid. How often should my brake fluid be flushed?
AASTRO Auto - Frequently Asked QuestionsEvery 30,000 miles or as indicated by a “litmus” test. Brake fluid gets extremely hot and it does “break down.” When this happens, the brake fluid will start to negatively effect the seals in the brake system. The debris from the seals then starts to impact the brake system operation, etc – It’s a “Domino Effect” that can be avoided by routine brake fluid flushes. See similar questions...

What brake fluid should I use?
Check the manual. Most older VWs use DOT 3. The newer ones use DOT 4 or Super DOT 4 (higher boiling point). Castrol makes one which is both DOT 3 and 4 compatible with a very high boiling point. The only place I have found Super DOT 4 in the US is at the VW dealer. One of the dealerships here also recommends Wagner as an aftermarket DOT 4 oil. The higher the boiling the better: Brake -> heat -> fluid boils -> bubbles -> loss in brake pressure -> crash. See similar questions...

How do I change my brake pads?
Brakes FAQsclip keeping the pads firmly in place. It can come flying out if the retainers are removed too quickly.
