Beamer TV does work with the digital phone service provided by Comcast and Cox Communications, since they change the signal to analog in the box outside the house. If you can use a V.90 56K modem or fax machine on a phone line, then you should be able to use Beamer TV on that same phone line.

No special equipment or wiring is required. All each person needs is a home phone, a home phone (analog) line and a television (NTSC format) with a RCA jack. Analog phone lines are standard for almost all homes in the U.S. If you are unsure of what type of phone line you have, contact your local phone service provider. If you usually have a good audio connection using a calling card, your video connection will be comparable. Cards that offer phone service provided by AT&T, MCI and Sprint typically provide good connections. However, Beamer TV may not work with Voice Over IP (VOIP) calling cards. As an alternative to the calling card, you may want to use a major dial around International Long Distance Service (such as 10-10, etc.), most of which should work well with Beamer TV.

Because it contains both the display and camera, setting up a ViaTV Desktop Videophone requires only two simple connections, one to the standard touch tone phone and one to a standard telephone wall jack. Once connected, ViaTV is ready to use. There is no software to load or install, and no personal computer is required.

The user controls the ViaTV Videophone with the touch tone keys of the telephone, aided by simple menus on the TV screen. Pressing the # key causes a menu to appear at the bottom of the screen. Menu items are numbered. Pressing the number of an item on the touch-tone keypad selects that item.

ViaTV video ranges from up to 15 frames per second (with the QUALITY menu set to FAST) to a frame every few seconds (with the QUALITY menu set to SHARP). Normal TV images are displayed at 30 frames per second, and theatrical films are displayed at 24 frames per second.

Long answer: The minimum requirement for reproducing audio and video on DVD is an MPEG video stream and a PCM audio track. (Other streams such as Dolby Digital audio, MPEG audio, and subpicture are not necessary for the simplest case.) Basic DVD control codes are also needed. At the moment it's difficult in real time to encode the video and audio, combine them with DVD-V info, and write the whole thing to DVD. Even if you could do all this in a home recorder, it would be extremely expensive.
