Neil Allen ILZ5 - Two that I'm trying that are supposed to do well in at least partial shade are camassia -- camass or quohash and Frittilaria melagris (guinea-hen flower). Of the two, the fritillaria is supposed to like shade more. I've also got an Arum italicum. Sure. Aucuba, Mahonia, Dwarf Sweet Box, Camellia and Leucothoe are examples. Look at the plant label to ascertain sun/shade requirements. If you plant a “sun-loving” plant (Crape Myrtle, Lilac) in full shade, flower production is compromised. Plus, the health of the specimen (disease tolerance, leaf production) will be compromised. No! Many Acer palmatum cultivars are very happy in a sunny exposure. This includes the red dissectums (or lace leaf maples), as well as trees with wider, palmate lobes. In fact, the red leaved trees need a few hours of sunlight to maintain their red color. In the Sculpture Gardens at Wildwood, one sees many maples growing in full sun. Some roses may grow reasonably well in partial but not dense shade. They will produce fewer blooms and may grow a little more "leggy" but still provide beauty. It is more difficult to grow "full sun quality grass" under the shade of a tree. The recommendation is to make the tree bed larger, proportionate to the tree size, following current arboricultural standards. What you are seeing is Blossom End Rot, the result of a calcium deficiency in the plant during fruit production. You can solve this problem by keeping the plants evenly and sufficiently watered in dry weather. Plants with fruit require around an inch of water a week. Also try to water the plants at the base. A periodic soil test early in the season will tell you if you should add lime, which will also make calcium more available to the tomatoes. See similar questions...

This is also due to an uneven watering schedule. Try to keep the soil from drying out by watering regularly (be sure to water in the morning). A good idea would be to give plants one deep watering per week for most soil types; two waterings for sandy soils. You should also mulch the plants to help retain moisture.
