Depending on your web browser and Java Runtime Environment the exact content of this security warning may vary. Please choose Yes (or Grant) to load the text display. In order to combat the rising number of virus-infected messages coming into NYU, ITS has instituted virus scanning at its main mail gateways. When the scanner finds a virus in a message sent to or from you it will remove it. Since the message was not delivered in its entirety, the scanner sends a note to both the sender and recipient of the message (see sample below).

OOC warnings are issued by GMs for being OOC (out-of-character). If you are not sure what is OOC and what is IC, type: ? role-playing for some guidelines. If you receive enough OOC warnings your character will not be allowed to think aloud until the number of warnings has been reduced.

We use a secure server for our online order form. We do not own the security certificate, but it is a secure site. When you see the gold lock in the bottom right corner of your screen, you know you are using a secure site.

When I start the installation, I get the message "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"

This is because the University uses security certificates issued by our own certification authority. Users of standard University software distributions should not see this warning as we (University of Bristol, Information Services) have already been set up as a valid certification authority. Other users will have encountered this warning before whenever accessing University secure web pages. If you wish to avoid the warnings, you need to recognise the University as a certification authority.

For a short time we had our Active-X control as an exe file to download and install. This program conflicts with IE security settings for Active-X controls, so it needs removed and then install the Active-X control from the website.

strange as that may seem, some older browsers incorrectly display out of date info on Security Certificates. For instance, effective January 1, 2000 Netscape 4.0 and below will do that. Upgrade your browser to MSIE5.0+ and Netscape4.7+ and you will not see this incorrect warning. Instead, your browser will cause a popup dialogue to appear with assurance you are about to enter a "secure connection" when you click on any of our links to the online Order Forms.
