Why does my image flicker?

ETV Personal Video Recorder - FAQ
Although you have Xv support, it seems your destination colorkey (=chromakey) does not work. The output from xvinfo should have an attribute called XV_COLORKEY. If it doesn't, you will have to use the software scaling version of the frontend (--noaccel option). Do contact me, I'd like to find out how to detect/workaround these cases. If this happens once a while, no problem. If it happens while your CPU usage is 100%, use a lower quality profile.

Why does my compact fluorescent light bulb flicker or appear dim when I first turn it on?

GE Consumer & Industrial Lighting: Ask Us: FAQs - Compact Fl...
The first compact fluorescent bulbs flickered when they were turned on because it took a few seconds for the ballast to produce enough electricity to excite the gas inside the bulb. Thanks to the refined technology in our new GE compact fluorescent bulbs, there is now no significant flicker (less than 1 second). However, these bulbs do require a short warm-up period before they reach full brightness, which is why they may appear dim when first turned on. See similar questions...

Webcam32 - Frequently Asked Questions
If you access Webcam32 in Server Push mode directly (ie not referenced in a web page) the image will appear to flicker. Why does the HP48 display flicker slightly?

HP48 Frequently Asked Questions List (FAQ): Questions about ...
Display flicker is usually caused by fluorescent lights. The rapid pulsing of the fluorescent lights (60 Hz in the the U.S. and Canada), which is normally unnoticeable, interacts with the rapid pulsing/scanning of the HP48 LCD display (64 Hz refresh rate), which is also normally unnoticeable. The 60 Hz fluorescent lights alias with the display refresh (64 Hz) to produce a 4 Hz "flicker". It's normal and harmless. Outside the U.S. and Canada, power is supplied at a 50 Hz rate, not 60 Hz. There are many companies who are copying our garage door screen and we do not mind, however, many have come and gone and there are still a few out there who copy but can not duplicate our quality. Each screen is made by hand and not on a production line or in a different country. Each one of our employees have been in the sewing and fabricating business for over 20 years and they take pride in their work, as their name goes on each screen they produce. Why does the freakin' image window drift down the screen?

XV Frequently Asked Questions
In another of a long line of Design Decisions I Regret, xv tries to do all sorts of clever things with regard to the image window's position on screen. For example, if you issue the Max Size command, xv will position the window so that the window's contents exactly fill the screen (and the titlebar, frame, etc. are off the edges). Clever when it works, a big pain in the ass when it doesn't. See similar questions...

Why does the screen go black and lose sync when I boot?

Frequently Asked Questions for FreeBSD 2.X, 3.X and 4.X
This is a known problem with the ATI Mach 64 video card. The problem is that this card uses address 2e8, and the fourth serial port does too. Due to a bug (feature?) in the sio(4) driver it will touch this port even if you do not have the fourth serial port, and even if you disable sio3 (the fourth port) which normally uses this address. Disable sio0, sio1, sio2 and sio3 (all of them). This way the sio driver does not get activated -> no problems. See similar questions...
