At the current time, the Harman corn stove appears capable of handling grass pellets at least up to 5.2% ash content, without any modifications to the stove.

Most likely not. Average pellet stoves with a standard burn pot are not designed to cope with high ash content. In general, corn stoves will have more potential to handle grass pellets because they are designed to deal with a somewhat messy residue. This is no guarantee that corn stoves will burn grass, corn stoves sometimes have difficulty dealing with corn.

Not yet. The major advantage of boilers over stoves is that they provide hot water and central hot water heating. Commercially available pellet boilers are designed to burn wood pellets and possibly corn pellets. They have no means of dealing with high ash content. They can successfully burn grass pellets, but will generate a large clinker that would need to be removed from the burn chamber every 6 hours or so, in order for the boiler to continue functioning.

We have the only site burning cool-season grass pellets in North America that we know of. REAP-Canada is burning switchgrass pellets in a Dell-Point Industries Europa stove. Switchgrass pellets are also being burned in Iowa in a Country Flame Technologies Harvester stove.

Dry, seasoned wood is best. The type of tree is not as important as moisture content. Wood must be allowed to dry for a minimum of 12 months, under cover, after being split and stacked. Popular firewood in the Northwest are: maple, alder, Douglas fir, spruce, apple and cherry. Another good fuel source is pressed fire logs, manufactured by pressurizing sawdust, as opposed to wax-based decorative logs, which have limited heating value.

No. Since the pellets are so efficient, the stoves do not need a chimney. All you need to do is vent them outdoors with a 4” pipe through an outside wall. So, choose the room you congregate in, place the stove in that room, and enjoy the ease and warmth of pellet heat! You’ll also enjoy watching the flames—and the fact that there is very little ash to clean.

On average, one 40 lb. bag of wood pellets will heat a 1,500 sq. ft. home for one or two days—depending on whether the pellets are your primary or secondary heating source. The amount you use will also depend on other factors such as how much heat you prefer, the amount of insulation in your home, the outside temperature, and so on. Some people use pellets as their primary heating source while others use it as secondary heat.

As with coal or wood stoves, and wood pellet stoves, routine maintenance is required. Pellet handling and ash removal make this less convenient than fossil fuels. There are some emissions as is the case with burning anything, but nothing like the wood stoves of the past.

Absolutely not. If both were available for the same price, wood pellets would be preferred as they will burn with less ash, making for easier cleanup of the stove. If the pellet stove industry continues to expand at its current rate, however, there will not be enough wood pellets to meet the market. This is the situation in parts of Europe and why wood pellets are currently being imported from North America to Europe (only economical due to subsidies).

The most effective repellents contain DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), which is an ingredient used to repel pests like mosquitoes and ticks. DEET has been tested against a variety of biting insects and has been shown to be very effective. The more DEET a repellent contains the longer time it can protect you from mosquito bites. A higher percentage of DEET in a repellent does not mean that your protection is better-just that it will last longer.

Pick one; they're all good. Any GPS receiver that can get pick up enough GPS satellites to get a fix on your position will work fine. Most people choose a GPS receiver in terms of what other uses they can make of it beyond wardriving. Many GPS receivers are designed for independent use (in other words, without connecting to a laptop or PDA) and have small graphic screens for displaying your current position.

Pellets that are too long can bridge or block the feeding mechanism. Our pellets are screened to remove long pellets as well as short pellets and fines. The pellets we sell are generally between 3/8 and 3/4 inch in length. Pellets that are too hard may jam the feeding mechanism.

A final building inspection is required once the pellet stove has been installed per the manufacturer's instructions and per the U.L. Listing.

A building permit must be taken out prior to installation of a solid fuel stove (wood, coal, pellet, etc). A copy of the manufacturer's specifications should be included with the permit application. These general guidelines may be used to install most stoves, new or used. If the stove is new, installation is in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and installation instructions. Many new stoves have built in features that allow you to reduce the minimum clearance guidelines below.

No company is doing this, but several are attempting to modify their stoves to better manage high ash fuels.
